ALLEN BELL --------- KAITAIA -- 1870 to 1914
edmondsallan - Good morning . We have a few " cussies " living in Kaitia. In fact, both our maori & pakeha ancestors have many ancestral tie ups to that area . " Allen Bell " is also one of our extended family . " Samuel . John Edmonds " my g grandfather wrote quite a bit about this family for some reason . He was trying to work out how to ship/ cart - in & out , cargo / freight from Auckland . I see he doesn't say what happened . In fact it ends abruptly. How strange.!! Ok, - we'll go with what we've got .
" Allen Bell " was born in Canterbury , NZ on the 14th Feb 1870 . His father was also "Allen Bell "and his mother was " Mary Mathews ".
( We are also related to her ) His father lost all in the depression of 1880 & moved to Taranaki . " Allen Bell " seved with the British Forces in South Africa in 1896 ( age 26 )-He was discharged on the 31st of January 1900 and returned to Taranaki , NZ.
29th Jan 1902 ( age 32 ) he married " James Helen Shaw Lambie " at " Pihama ". they shifted to Te Rapa Hamilton , Waikato .NZ. His first child a daughter " Elaline " was born on the 6th July 1904 . In 1906 he established a land agency ( real estate ) . He became a a real go getter in the Farmer's Union. He was one of the original founders of the Co-operative Dairy Company plus ( 2 ) other companies he controlled in Hamilton . Between 1907 and 1909 he was a member of the Hamilton Borough Council and in 1908/9 He was chairman of the Waikato Hospital board and charitable aid Board .
Military affairs played a big part of his life . In April 1904 he was elected a 'Lieutenant 'in No 1 Waikato Mounted Rifle Volunteers .He went on to become a ' Captain ' and commanded the unit . Feb'1908 he was promoted to ' Major ' In August ," Bell " was made a
" Lieutenant Colonel " and was given the command of the 2nd Regiment - Auckland Mounted Rifle Volunteers . 1906 to 1910 he played a key role in campaigning for compulsory military training .
He also contested unsuccessfully two ( 2 ) elections . He resigned his Military commission in January 1912. In 1914 . " Allen Bell " & his two brothers " Leonard & Walter " Moved to " Kaitaia , in the Far North , where they purchased a farm on which much of the present day " Kaitaia " is built today .
