the following was researched for Margaret65 after her query on 15-4-2011 .. "I have a John Smith born abt 1834 London England who married a Mary Kimber HILDRETH in NZ 1860, have you come across this Smith in your research. I would love to find out where exactly he from and any other family HE may have had. I know all about their 12 children!"

John Smith (1834-1917)
- married Mary Kimber Hildreth (1838-1909) on 4 June 1860 in Waimea South, Nelson
- John was born in London, England in March 1834
- he arrived into Nelson 15 October 1855 on the "Queen Margaret"
- for the first 9 years he was engaged in surveying, farming and teaching (he was a teacher from 1856 to 1907)
- in 1860 he was teaching at River Terrace School
- in 1864 he was appointed headmaster of the Nelson Boys School
- John was the Inspector & Secretary of the Westland Board of Education and receved the appointment in Oct 1890 of Secretary for the Marlborough Board of Education

- the 12 children of James SMITH & Mary Kimber HLDRETH

- of interest also on board the "Queen Margaret' was Lewis & Annie Mary BRYANT & their 5 children. In 1863 Lewis was also a teacher at River Terrace

There appears to be other connections with the families of SMITH, HILDRETH and BRYANT

There is no available list of the 48 steerage passenger that were on the "Queen Margaret" (the Cabin passengers are known and a journal is in the making) so the names of the 5 children of Lewis & Annie Mary Bryant is being researched 'the long way' for Margaret65 who asked if one of their children was Mary Townsend Bryant ...

28 Feb 1875
- death of Oliver Brodrib Bryant, youngest son of Lewis & Annie Bryant of River Terrace, Spring Grove, aged 3 years and 7 months (birth year of 1871)

4 June 1875
- death of Arthur Ernest Bryant at River Terrace, Spring Grove of bronchitis & laryngitis, aged 5, youngest surviving son of Lwis & Annie Bryant (birth year of 1870)

17 Aug 1876
- marriage of Mary Townsend Bryant at her father's home, 2nd daughter of Lewis Bryant of River Terrace to William HILDRETH (1855-1920) of Mount Heslington (Mary was born 1853, died 1934)
- read about the marriage of their daughter Ellen May Hildreth to Ralph George Eric SIMMONDS, a Lieutenant in the Blenheim Rifles and Captain of the Cadet Corps, in June 1902. Valuable reading as it mentions her sisters names as bridesmaids and names of other relatives

- James Spence Bryant married Elizabeth FUNNELL (1855-1887)
- he remarried in 1891 to Annie COOK

- marriage of Emma Claypole bryant at River Terrace, 3rd daughter of Lewis Bryant, to George Stanfield HAYCOCK of Hope and Skiddaw Run Pelorus (Emma was born 1858, died 1936)

14 Dec 1891
- marriage of Clara Louisa Bryant at River Terrace, 4th daughter of Lewis Bryant, to Richard Dockery WALLIS (1855-1941) of Motueka (Clara was born in 1860, died in 1957)

- Lewis Robert Bryant married Helen STEPHENSON

21 Feb 1899
marriage of William Henderson Bryant at St Paul's Anglican Church, Brightwater to Theresa Magdalena 'Daisy' MAX (1876-1950)
- Daisy was 11 years younger than William and had been a student of his at Brightwater School

15 Aug 1899
- marriage of Ellen Margaret Bryant to Robert KINGSLEY (friend and collegue of ber brother William)
- in 1923 Ellen married Christian John Charles DENCKER

6 Oct 1900
- death of Lewis Bryant, native of Bristol, in Brightwater, Nelson aged in his 86th year (birth year 1815)
- Lewis was born 3 days after the Battle of Waterloo and began his business life in his father's large wholesale grocery & merchant business

Remembering that the 'Queen Margaret' arrived in Nelson in 1855 with 5 children, means any births after that year were in New Zealand
note the tentaive names are not verified yet

Lewis Bryant's biography says he brought up 3 sons & 5 daughters. As there were at least 7 children born in NZ and 5 children on the 'Queen Margaret' child deaths were obviously not counted
