James Thompson Cairns was born in 1840 in St Ninians Parish Scotland and arrived in Melbourne, Australia with his family as unassisted migrants in 1854. Eldest son of David Cairns and Janet Thompson.

James Thompson Cairns was a rabbit inspector for the County of Mornington over a long period of time. Several public notices can be found in the Mornington Standard (through Trove) bearing his name. James Thompson appears to have also purchased and held land Cape Schanck.

Arthur Cairns - Birth is possibly Dromana. Still not clear whether married or not?
Christina Lillian - death location appears to be West Rosebud with burial in Rye
Johanna Violet - Conflicting accounts of whether name is Johanna Violet or Violet Johanna? Possibly married William Norman Wilson (yr unkn). Death and location unknown

Happy to exchange any additional information on James Thompson Cairns for anyone who is interested: [email protected]

Thanks camcairns.

There was a marriage for Violet CAIRNS and William Norman WILSON in 1929, but have not been able to confirm if this was Johanna Violet CAIRNS.

It's also possible her correct given names were Violet Johanna. I have noticed in the birth records that given names were sometimes recorded in reverse, or so it appears when looking at marriage and death records for the same person.
