NOTE from The Waipapa Stream ... Claybrook house built in 1842 is the oldest house in Auckland still on its original site. Brookside the name given to the property where Parnell's shops now stand. This was owned by Major Henry Matson. Matson (1788-1867) was a veteran 1812 War of Independence and fought with Canada against the US.
He married Isabella de Thierry, the daughter of Henry de Thierry who in 1837 tried to claim New Zealand under French sovereignty hence accelerating British interests and the Treaty of Waitangi.
Isabella died at Brookside in 1850, and Matson remarried Amelia Channing who went on to become the first woman to be elected in Auckland
