Charles ALLEY & Emily NICHOLAS - Hikutaia

HIKUTAIA is located on the Hauraki Plains of New Zealand. It lies on State Highway 26, south east of Thames and north of Paeroa. The Hikutaia River runs from the Coromandel Range through the area to join the Waihou River.

The area has a rich history of Maori settlement, with several pa in the vicinity.
The local iwi are Ngati Maru and Ngati Paoa


CHARLES ALLEY (1858-1915)
- was born 27 Oct 1858 at Tutaekuri, Taradale - 10km SW of Napier

EMILY NICOLAS (1864-1903)
- was born in Hikutaia, Waikato - 12km N of Paeroa


CHARLES & EMILY married 27 Oct 1885 in Taradale, Napier
- it was Charles's 30th birthday. Emily was 21

they had 12 known CHILDREN in Hikutaia (10 sons)

1887 - 1939 Albert 'Burt' Henry Alley
- Burt married Rubina Myrtle 'Ruby' AVERY (1891-1946) from Pahiatua, in 1914
- Ruby was a daughter of George AVERY of Taita & Sarah Elizabeth SCRIMSHAW
ALBERT & RUBY are buried at Omahu cemetery, Thames

- James married Stella INGLIS in 1918
- he married Lucy Eveleen HENDRY (nee BARRIBALL) in 1930
JAMES is buried in Omahu cemetery

1890 - 1977 Charles Robert Alley
- Charles died 6 Nov 1977 in Hikutaia aged 87
- he is buried in Omahu cemetery

1891 - 1917 Alfred William Alley
- Alfred served in WWI. When he was 24 he moved to Australia and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces in Sydney. Although his parents were still alive in Hikutaia he had as his next of kin his Aunty Clara Alley also in Hikutaia, Thames. He served as Corporal 9872 with the Field Artillery Brigade 1, Reinforcement 13, Trench Mortar Battery. He enlisted from 144 Renwick Street, Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales. Alfred was Killed In Action in Belgium on 20 Nov 1917 aged 26 (7 months after his brother David was killed in action in France). He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (awarded Military Medal), 'For gallant conduct during enemy attack on NOREUIL

1893 - 1963 George Edward Alley
- George married Ava Lilian ARCHIBALD in 1915

1895 - 1916 David Clifford Alley
- David served in WWI as Private 12/2932 with the Auckland Infantry Battalion, 7th Reinforcements. His next of kin was his father, Charles Alley, at Hikutaia. David was Killed in Action 26 Sep 1916 in Somme, France aged 21 (7 months before his brother Alfred was killed in action in Belgium). His memorial is at Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France

- Eric died 29 Nov 1918 aged 20. This was during the flu pandemic but not known if this was his cause of death

Hiya! I am trying to find out info on my family also. My grandmother was Olga Alley from Thames but I can't find any info I am trying to trace my Maori roots as I am Ngati Maru and would be grateful if you new anything?

hi Kerry, do you have Olga's birth date (was it 17 Dec 1918?).
Olga May Alley died 16 June 2000 aged 82
If that was her, was that her maiden or married name?.

Best to give as much info as you have to make it easier for others to recognise her
