Cox of Ashford NSW

Journal by noony

I am interested in finding more information on my ggrandfather Samuel Morton Cox. He was married to Johanna Matilda Noaks-Wilson and when she died he married Elizabeth Beard. His son my grandfather was John Robert Cox (son of Johanna). He was born at Ashford 1892. I dont have places or birth dates for Samuel Johanna or Elizabeth. Brothers and sisters to John Robert are - Charles Henry, Alice Evelyn, Samuel Edward, May Elizabeth, Florence Minnie, Clarence Alexander, Elizabeths children Brisbane, Grace Jessie, Arthur & Joyce. Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Noony, Hi. Forgive me if you have this information already, but here goes...

According to NSW bdms online, the only COX that was born at Inverell around the time of your g.grandfather was in 1890 by the name of Robert S. Cox. How positive are you that your g.grandfather was born at Ashford in 1892? And that that was his correct name? I've often seen middle names for first names and the other way around. Certificates are sometimes the only reliable evidence.

I think this is the birth registration of Samuel's 1st wife:- V1854708 42A/1854 WILSON Johanna M N father Thomas mother Johanna.

I cannot find marriage between Samuel Morton COX and Johanna Matilda in NSW. Perhaps they were emigrants to Australia, or travelled interstate to NSW.

Did Johanna M COX die in 1910? There's a registration number 12010 in 1910 at Sydney NSW for a Johanna M COX with father: Thomas that would seem to match.

Marriage between Samuel Cox and 2nd wife Elizabeth S. BEARD was in 1915 at Inverell NSW, registration number 7230.

NB I have lots of BEARDs in my family tree due to intermarriage to the MOST and MERRY families.

Deaths of children with parents names Samuel & Johanna:-

In 1879, Samuel G. COX died at Warialda registration number 9401.

In 1960, Samuel COX died at Inverell registration number 11798/1960.

Ok, found your family here, Cemeteries of the Darling Downs all buried Ashford Cemetery, Inverell Street, Inverell NSW. As this cemetery was photographed back in 2006, the site has an email contact of a lady who is happy to share photographs upon request.

Cox Robert C 16 Jun 1948 22mths
Cox Samuel 23 Nov 1923 63yrs
Cox Samuel Edward 24 May 1960 67yrs

... The more information you can provide, the more I can possibly find for you.

Try and purchase as many bdm certs as you can to narrow down and accurately trace the correct COX family as it is a very common and popular surname.

Bye, Alison (QLD).
MOST/MERRY descendant.

Thanks Al, that is great. I know of most of the Cox's you have listed here. I will buy some certificates based on this info to help me find out more.

My grandfather was definitely John Robert Cox and I am sure his birth year is correct as it came from his daughter. Maybe he was never actually registered. Can probably check some details from his death certificate anyway.

Thanks M alias Noony
