Hi Ngaire (a lovely Kiwi name!),

I'm following this Harris line because Samuel Gregory HARRIS, who was involved in the survey of New Plymouth, is my grandson's 4th great grandfather. To add to the confusion, I believe that this family is also tied into my own maternal line.

The Alexander Riches who died in 1910 was said to be 74, giving a birth date of 1836, not 1834.

Have you seen this website: http://www.thewhittingtons.org.nz/theriches/a_riches.html ? In particular, his age at enlistment into the Taranaki Militia, 27 in Jan 1864, fits an 1836 birth. It also gives his birthplace as Dartmouth, Devon. He was unmarried at that time.

His intention to marry Emma Harris listed him as a batchelor, as well.

The names given for his parents at death were Alexander Riches/Mary Harriet Harris (so same as yours).

That site also includes a story about a pregnant lover who arrived in NZ with him, the fiancee of the Duke of Wellington, who may be who you have in mind.

Cheers

Additional bit: I now see from the Whittington site that this also ties in with a birth registered in the St Lukes District, Middlesex (which is not Dartmouth), in the June qtr of 1839, seen by them to be 24th March 1839!

Gets more and more puzzling: perhaps a spot of identity theft? Or an extremely late registration (which was not compulsory in 1836).

James LOMAX: I am wondering whether he is this one, but haven't time to check it out, yet: James LOMAX, born 1855, married 1879 Anne Elizabeth READ, born 16 Apr 1855, died 1912 <NZBDM 1912/6061>, buried Karori (Wellington, where the READ families first settled). This would make James 71 on marriage to Emma HARRIS/RICHES.

Bit more:

James LOMAX: died 1948, buried Old Wanganui Cemetery (Heads Rd);
Emma HARRIS/RICHES/LOMAX died 1950, buried Purewa, Auckland.

Hello Ngaire

My name is Karlo Potic and I am a Great Great Grandson of George COOPER and Florence Rosemond RICHES.

As far as I can tell George was an only child. His parents were George COOPER and Isabella WALKER.

George COOPER senior was born February 17th 1834 at Longside,Aberdeen,Scotland to parents Peter COOPER and Margaret McKENZIE.They had a least one other child I am aware of - Margaret COOPER born circa September 1837 also at Longside,Aberdeen in Scotland.I know nothing more of her line.

George COOPER married Isabella WALKER on June 30th 1856 at Monquitter,Aberdeen,Scotland. Isabella was the daughter of John WALKER and Ann SMITH.They had at least 8 children including Isabella. Some others of this WALKER line came to NZ and I have a family tree of this line my Grandmother got many years ago.

If you would like more info, let me know.

Karlo
