Hello jlake - He is a brief on the name " earle " the name started in AD 0973 . the first known was " Aeelfheim - Earl of Northampton ( which in those days was called " Mercia ' England ) In the 1500's AD it had changed to " Erle " by the 1700's it had changed to " Earle " and has remained the same since .
