Hi Tonkin,

Alexander's parents are still a mystery. Alexander appears to have been born sometime between 1825 and 1827 in Alva, Scotland. Alexander did arrive on the Thomas Fielden(g) with David and his family. Alexander's relationship with David and Robert is still unclear. It was always thought that he was a brother, which he may be, but a cousin or even a half brother should also be considered. I suspect he is a close cousin. It should be noted, for anyone out there researching, this Alexander is not the Alexander Cairns who established buisnesses in Melbourne before moving to New Zealand - this Alexander also seems part of the extended family, in all liklihood a cousin being born in the same village(Menstrie) in Scotland as Robert David (and Betty)but to different parents. Contact me if you would like more information: camcairns@hotmail.com

Ican suggest the following edits for the children of Alexander Cairns and Janet Dalgleish:
James is the oldest being born in Scotland circa 1850
John Dalgleish born Scotland circa 1852
Alexander born 11/03/1855
Robert Cairns was born 19/10/1857 in Boneo, died 1910 poss Carlton poss b Rye
Janet Cairns born circa 1859, married William Cater Brent, and had at least 2 children James and Alexander. D 16/08/1909 Flinders
David Cairns b circa 1861, d circa 1935 Rye? marriage unknown

Birth details are not as well recorded for Alexander and Janet's children as they are for David and Robert's for reason unknown.

Wannaene was a parsih in the county of Mornington. Wannaene largely includes current day Boneo

Thank you camcairns.

Don't know how I missed the births for Alexander, David, Robert and Janet. Will search the births again and update.

So Wannaene was a parish ... I was close when I said it may be a property.

Cheers.

Yes it is a parish but it is WANNAEUE and also covers Dromana.

by camcairns on 2014-01-13 19:23:11

Thanks rusgey. I used the spelling from copies of some of the earliest parish maps(late 1850's, early 1860's) - these can be viewed online through the State Library of Victoria's website. The spelling obviously changed at some point.

If you Google Wannaene and Wannaeue both spellings come up.
I also stumbled across an old map with the spelling Wannaeue.
Someone may know when the name was changed.
