FINN and O'SULLIVAN Families

Journal by Megsy1955

Patrick John FINN was a convict sent to WA on board the Mermaid on 17/5/1851. Court Martial on 11/1/1849 New Brunswick (Northern America/Canada) sentenced to 14 yrs for Army - desertion when he was 29 yrs old. Little is known about Patrick, we believe he remained in WA.
Margaret (DEVINE) arrived in Western Australia aboard the ship, "Travencore", on 13/1/1853 .Worked with women at Rottnest Island, just off Perth - (they were known as the needle women) (Travencore was one of the brides ships!)
Margaret brought the family over to Vic where we think she met Peter McCarthy O'Sullivan they were married on the property "Lovely Bank" (near Inverell NSW) on 29/10/1884. Together Margaret & Peter O'Sullivan had 3 sons & 1 daughter (died infant)

Children of Patrick & Margaret FINN included my great grandfather - John Henry Finn who was born in WA. Married Sarah Jane Whitby in 11/4/1883 Gum Flat (near Inverell NSW). they had i child -
Charles Joseph Vernon Finn (born 1884) married Ivy Maud HALL in 1912.
(Charles & Ivy are my grand parents)
Any further information would be great. Megsy

Did you get any info from your post. Margaret Devine / Patrick Finn are my GGGParents.
I have a fair bit of the family tree available.
Thet were in WA intil about 1860 and had 4 children by then, they were in the New England disrtict of NSW from about 1863 and had a further 3 [or possibly more] children.
The fate of Patrick Finn seems to be a bit of a mystery.

Hi TheProf
No have had no other reply to my post Re: Finn & O'Sullivan Family.

As far as I am aware - Patrick John Finn deserted the family of the 3 boys and his wife Margaret after a jail sentence - he just took off. I am possitive that he remained in WA. I have info that he was living at the Mt Eliza Depot at the same time that his family were already in NSW - and Margaret his wife remarried to Peter O'Sullivan and had further family.

I have never been able to connect the other children born to Margaret and named Finn with Patrick John Finn. (My mother told me that Margaret housekept for many people - the extra children were all born in NSW.

I have the marriage certificate of Patrick & Margaret

I would love to know where you fit in - and to find out what you have on Patrick John Finn - I have copies of some of his jail details from WA that cost me a bundle to have sent to me from the library - Am willing to share but of course I would like some feed back for it. Merren

I have a little info on Patrick's army life, including a copy of the newspaper report of his escape and recapture following his Court Martial. One researcher quoted that during his army service he had developed "skiving" into an art form.

While I cannot find the Birth registratons for the 3 following children - they are listed within the family records that I have been able to access.

(5th Child) Richard Francis Finn 1863-1931 born in Scone NSW, Married Jane Wilkins [sister of William] 10 Jul 1866 [N 5718/1866] and had 7 children

(6th child) Mary Finn 1869-1931 born in Murrundi [possible twin for Catherine as both listed for same place and year within the info I have] - I come from this branch. If Patrick is not the father of the latter children I need a time machine to try to determine where I really came from!!
Married Charity Morton 1861-1948 [Charity's son Charity 1887-1964 causes no end of confusion][[Charity's brother Hope had a son Hope!]

(7th child) Catherine 1869-1931 born Murrundi, married William Wilkins, divorced him in 1895 for adultery with the housekeeper. 1 child listed. He remarried in 1897 with 4 further children listed.

Much of this has come from online sources, some from family members and some from the research done by the Genetic Eye Foundation.
No previous direct mention has been made that Patrick stayed behind in WA, but his eventual whereabouts and demise remain a puzzle.

Hi Merren,

From her death registration [N 9855/1931] Mary Finn would have been born c 1863, the registration lists her mother and in the father's spot just has her age 68 years.

Cheers Kevin

Hi Merren, I am assuming you are Nell's daughter. I am Bobs youngest daughter Traci. Uncle Bert once told me that our greatgrandfather travelled on horse back from WA across the desert....dont know if he was pulling my leg or not.
