First-Day pupils of IONA COLLEGE - 14 Feb 1914

IONA COLLEGE is a state-integrated girls' school in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, set on 27 acres of park-like grounds. The College was founded in 1914 by the Presbyterian Church, it was intended to provide boarding facilities for girls from rural communities.

The (19th) Prime Minister, the Right Honourable William Ferguson Massey, opened Iona College on February 14 1914

Ionas buildings were severely affected by the February 1931 earthquake and the College had to be closed for a year while refinancing and rebuilding took place. The opening roll in 1932 was 27 boarders and nine day pupils.

In 1914 Iona College will be celebrating it's Centenary

In April 1907 her father was instrumental in the opening of the new Methodist church in the little town of Pohangina. Her mother died 10 Dec 1908 aged 47 at their farm 'Glengarnock, Colyton & is buried Plot 081, Block 010 at Terrace End, Palmerston North. Her father next married Mary Ethel Frazer (1881-?) at her brother James Hepburn Frazer's (1882-1948) residence at Colyton on 11 Jan 1910 & they had a daughter in 1912, Marjorie Jessie Brown. In Dec 1914 her father was elected as Councillor for the Mangaone Riding. Minnie's father died 15 Dec 1939 aged 73 and is buried with his first wife (Minnie's mother)

- in 1878 Stephen was in Wainui when he got the contract to erect the 3 miles of rabbit fence along the Wainui-Tahoraite road. In Oct 1885 he was one of many townsfolk who donated towards the completetion of the rabbit-proof fence. In 1893 he was on the Weber Road Board. In 1906 he is in Dannevirke. In 1908 he was appointed by the Government to the position of assessor for the Hastings Borough.
In Sep 1912 Stephen's estate was assessed for stamp duty at £19,473 (2012 equivalent of $3,030,300)
Mercy (1900-?) first attended Sacred Heart School in Napier, where, in 1909 she won a prize for her drawing

GREGORIE, Mary Catherine - 15.11 - Havelock North
- daughter of Frederick Macaulay GREGORIE (1862-1945) & Edith DINWIDDIE (1874-1954) who married in Napier in 1897. Edith was a daughter of newspaper proprietor Peter Forrest Dinwiddie. They farmed at Oporae in the Dannevirke District until 1907 when they retired to Havelock North. In 1914, they moved to Gorge End, a farm near Pahiatua and in 1940 they retired for the second time, to Palmerston North. Fred Gregorie died at Palmerston North on August 26 1945, and Edith died in Masterton on May 3 1954 (much more about this family at Catherine's link)

- Catherine was educated at home at Oporae until she was 9 then attended Woodford House before going to Iona. Mary left school to live with her parents at Gorge End, Pahiatua, during the First World War. After the war she went to live in Wellington and married Donald KINNELL, an Englishman who was visiting his brothers in New Zealand, on April 14, 1924. Donald and Mary Kinnell lived at Walton-on-Thames, England, where their only daughter, Jean Mary (Jenny), was born on January 12, 1925. In 1960 she went to live in Australia, first at Terrigal, NSW and then at Murwillumbah, NSW. In 1953 she went to New Zealand to look after her mother until her death in 1954, when she returned to Australia. Mary died in 1990, aged 102 (all this information and a great deal more on her ancestors & descendants is on the site The Gregories)

Elizabeth was from Ireland and arrived in Auckland in 1883 with her sister Margaret Ann (1865-1956) on the 'Rangitiki'. Her sister Margaret married Robert Sowersby which is probably where Myrtle got her name

at some time Mary was in Buenos Aires, Argentina - OF INTEREST, Hugh and Dempster Thompson above, (2 brothers of her class mate, Myrtle Thompson, lived and worked for a time in Argentina on their uncles ranch) possible reason??
in 1868 there were a number of Tiffen in the (now 'Old') Napier cemetery
in February 1914 the examination results for the proficiency qualifications showed that Mary Tiffen of Te Hapara School, Gisborne headed the list, closely followed by Kathleen Redwood
