From Germany to Australia 1870 - Sauer, Knoll, Duckwitz

Journal by pebbles1

The German line in my family came from Wollschow (near Prenzlau, NW of Berlin)and Friedberg in Germany.
Maria Christina Duckwitz 1818 - 1900 came from Wollschow.
Her son August Wilhelm Duckwitz 1841 - 1919 married 1867 to Albertine Wilhelmina Sauer 1844-1930. They migrated to Australia as part of a larger family group including Ruthenberg's in 1870.

Albertine's parents were Christian Sauer and Wilhelmina Knoll.

If you can help me go back before then I'd appreciate it.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on a Martin Sauer, born December 13th, 1861 in Satulmare, Bukowina, Romania married Elizabeth Sahling born December 10th, 1864 in Galizian, Poland had eight children. Ranging from oldest to youngest:
John(born 1894)
Frank (born 1896)
Elizabeth (born 1898)
Carl Sauer (born 1899)
Joseph (born 1902)
Anton (Tony) (born 1905)
Emily (born 1908)
The family emigrated from Romania in 1911, first settling in the area of Southey, Saskatchewan; later most of the family settled in the Fox Valley area. (Canada)

This is basically all the information I have...
Maybe they are connected?

G'day Haruvo
Maybe they are- but more research needed. The first names certainly would give hope, but they are common names. When Albertine Wilhelmine Sauer married August Wilhelm Duckwitz, they named their children
Auguste Wilhelmine;
Marie Louisa;
Marie Louisa Alvine;
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm;
Wilhelmine Albertine;
Maria Albertine;
Sarah Annie;
Frank Fred Marshall;
James Frank.

Albertine Wilhelmina's father was Christian, but I have no dates for him or siblings or parents. But guessing from AW's birth date of 1844, Christian is going to have to be around 1800- 1824.

So coming back to your Martin Sauer, perhaps if related he might be a nephew of AW or a grandson of Christian.
Perhaps this year I may do more research here. It is through my maternal grandfathers side, going back to his maternal grandmother's father. I'd love to visit that part of Europe so that would be the incentive on this line of research.

Sorry Reggie4, I'm not understanding many of your words like "millaukee" "wis""sun" "prune" "merrll". Perhaps they are German/Polish words or abbreviations or are you American and they are US abbreviations.

by Scott_J on 2010-05-02 07:19:49

They are US locations, all in Wisconsin (WIS)

millaukee = Milwaukee and I'm not familiar with "sun prune" or "merrll", though I assume the latter is Merrill.

Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin and the 23rd most populous city in the United States

The only name I can find close to reggie4's 'sun prune' is that of Sun Praire a town in Dane County, Wisconsin created on 2nd February 1846 by Charles Bird, the first settler. It is 74 miles (119km) west of Milwaukee

Merrill was originally a logging town by the name of Jenny Bull Falls. The settlement commenced with a trading post in 1843. The name was changed to Merrill in honor of S.S. Merrill, the general manager of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad. It is now a city in Lincoln County, Wisconsin, 204 miles (329km) north of Milwaukee

He then married Katharina Sahling (Saling)13 Jul 1890 in Czernowitz, Bukovina. She was born 10 Dec 1864 Niezuchów, Galicia d. 02 Mar 1954 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, Canada. They had nine children;
