Gaffney

Journal by australianancestor

Hi

I am searching for information about CATHERINE GAFFNEY born 25/6/1870 (my Great Grandmother). The information I have is that she was born in County Clare, and that her father was James Gaffney. In 1892 she married William J Wittfoht in Port Pirie, South Australia. She died in Western Australia 23/12/1949. I'd be really grateful if anyone can shed any light.

Thanks
Terri

GOLDEN WEDDING at CAPEL
Of interest to many old West Australians was the golden wedding celebrations of Mr and Mrs J. L. BENTLEY, of Capel, which took the form of a dinner at the Capel Hotel last week.
Mr and Mrs Bentley, who were born in the Moore River district and Guildford, respectively, were married in St Matthew's Church, Guildford, in 1890, the late Rev Sweeting performing the ceremony. After their marriage they took up residence in the Donnybrook district, where Mr Bentley had commenced farming operations. They lived there for a number of years and in 1906 transferred to Capel, where Mr Bentley still takes an active part in the supervision of his property
Guests at their wedding were received by Mr and Mrs Bentley's daughters, Mrs S. Y. Burnett an Miss G. Bentley, and during dinner some interesting toasts, including that of the guests of honour, were honoured. Another was that of Mr and Mrs F. Oliver, of Northam, who were the flower girl an page boy at the wedding in 1890.
The best man (Mr Albert E. Cockram) was unable to be present, but his was one of the many telegrams received.
Those present at the dinner were:
Mr and Mrs F. G. BENTLEY
Mr and Mrs Max BENTLEY

Hi, many thanks for your reply and the interesting information you've provided.

Yes, she did indeed marry William John Wittfoht. Theresa (Tessie) and David Sharpe were my Grandparents. I'm trying to find out more about where Catherine Gaffney actually came from, why she left Ireland, and any possible relatives on the Gaffney side.

yes, thanks Terri, I know you are after info for Catherine but by providing as many names and place names as you can in connection with 'the main characters' the better chance you have that someone will know something, e.g. descendants of her other children OR, indeed, descendants of any friends as above, may very well know once we 'trigger' their memories

Right, thanks, it would be great if someone can turn up a clue or two!
