GEORGE EDWIN ALDERTON ----- KERIKERI -- NZ

Journal by edmondsallan

Good morning. I think in life one of the must do things is to remind ourselves , what our Family ancestors did and also the other early settlers . It is very easy to say " Thats all old stuff & in the past"
Perhaps my views are wrong. Certainly not everybody's piece of cake . I still can't help thinking , if we lived in a very high building , pulled the original foundation away . the whole building should collapse. I think some of the foundations the early settlers put in has made us what we are to day and developed many areas of land and our thinking .
Kerikeri owes - " George Edwin Alderton " big time . He visulized what we actually see today . A sheltered area , all in trees , orchards with homes and people settled their growing fruit . I think that his vision for the future was supreme . In 1886 he had seen some Viticulture & citrus growing orchards, in California , USA . I think this shaped his mind on what he wanted to do eventually .
He arrived in Whangarei . Northland in 1875 ,aged 21 . He established a one manned Newspaper - " Northern Advocate " . At the age of ( 43 ) -22 years later he retired from the well established Newspaper he had created. In 1907, after being semi retired for 10 years now
( aged 53 ) he moved to Auckland and became a well known Real-Estate Agent . With the backing of some Financial Business People , he formed a company " North Auckland Land Development Co' " The raised Capital of the Company was Thirty five thousand Pounds ( 35,000 -Pounds ) a huge amount for those days. By adding another heavy morgage to the debt acrude the company purchased the sheep & cattle Station
( ** > Yes readers that lovely land full of homes and orchards at Kerikeri was a huge station of 6,817 acres owned at that time by
George Riddell . I can remember staying at a motel there with the wife & 2 kids they were swimming in the motel Pool while we were having a Gin. We thought how beautiful it was to be among the Blossoms . Hells Bells - I just remembered. Thats nearly ( 40 ) years ago when I was researching back then . < ** ) I might dwell on that thought a bit , I'll make a cuppa , call the missus and have chat about those days . Till we meet again - Regards - edmondsallan .
