German ancestry

Query by Bikermerv

I am tracing the family of my great, great grandfather Jacob HIPPARD. I have found his father George HIPPARD shown in the various Census documents as born in c 1807 in Litton, Loyton, Loxton and also East Harp tree Somerset. At least it appears that he was born in Somerset !!

In the family there is a repeated history that George HIPPARD was of German origin and that his name had been changed to HIPPARD from one of the following:

HIPPERT, HIPPER, HUPPERT, IPPER, IPPAR.. Family names have been repeated like George, Jacob and Mark, which could have been GEORG, JAKOB and MARKUS in German. The fact that he came from Germany has suggested to family members that he was Jewish, but there is no evidence of this. I have looked at some of the German surnames and HIPPERT originates from Northern Germany. Another suggestion in the family is that George HIPPARD 's father was shipwrecked on the Cornish coast ! If this was correct, was he a Fisherman, Passenger or a Sailor?

If HIPPERT is from Northern Germany ( Saxony) then he might have left from Wilhelmshafen, Bremerhafen or even Hamburg.
Are there any HIPPARD researchers who can shed some " light" on the HIPPARD line please.
