NEW POST APRIL 2018

My research is amassing a lot of 'floating' information, now, concerning the Gilbert families of Erith and surrounding areas as far as Charlton and Deptford in the west and Dartford in the east. I am SPECIFICALLY looking for links back to the long-standing Gilbert families of Erith, not incomers from other parts during the 19th century, (although I ALSO have tree links with the Gilberts of Cranbrook in Kent). My trouble seems to be with certain marriages/families and defining the origin of the parents. i have some obvious holes in my tree which I am anxious to plug, so if there is anyone out there who is related to these particular families and knows the history and provenance of them, I would love to hear! the particular marriages are:
Henry Gilbert = Hester Wooding sometime after 1800? Who was Henry's father? (Hester Woodin Gilbert re-married John Chapman on 14th April 1822 in Bexley - the Chapmans were friends of the Gilberts and appear in Wills)
John Gilbert m Elizabeth Groom on Christmas Day 1858 in St John's Erith. his father was Henry Gilbert. who was this Henry??
Henry Gilbert m Ann Brooks on 13 July 1834 at St John, Erith. Who was his father??
Thomas Gilbert m Sarah Smith on 13 June 1826 in Bexley. who was his father??
William Gilbert m Sarah Eason(spelt various ways) 18 Sep 1836 St Nicholas, Plumstead. Who was his father?
Henry Gilbert m Phoebe Holland(s) on 10 Oct 1852 in Dartford. father was Thomas Gilbert. both ag labs. Who was this Thomas??
William Gilbert m Emma Glanfield on 26 Sep 1857 in Bexley. father was John Gilbert. Which John Gilbert??
John Gilbert m Ann Russell in Dec quarter 1856 in Dartford Union district. Who is this John Gilbert?

There are many more, but I have a gap with Henry Gilbert - a name that was a family name but an early Henry was somewhat 'put down' by his father John's will in 1789 (my GGGGF) Henry was named after his grandfather so was the firstborn son, but must have misbehaved because the majority of the estate (Herring Hill Farm) went to his other sons Thomas, William and Moses Gilbert. perhaps the name Henry was little used because of this? I have few records of births after this date with the name Henry - does anybody out there know differently? (please!!)
Family names that ricochet down the ages are: John, Henry, Thomas, Moses, William, George (usually the last born) as well as Esther (VERY strong usage) and Charlotte (on one side of the family). Other names are used, but nothing too fancy until the latter 19th century.

ORIGINAL POST

I am researching these three families of my tree, which intermarried during the 18th & 19th centuries. The GILBERTS were generally farmers in Erith but I need to extend back beyond 1750. The GRATWICKS married into the Gilberts and the Crafters and were centred on Deptford, Southwark and Erith. They too, were mainly of farming stock and often had 'gentleman' or 'Esq' title in census and wills. The CRAFTER family were lawyers, businessmen and ordinary workers - one was an Auctioneer. One owned much property in the Old Kent Road and was a victualler.

There are potential links of these families to wider areas of North Kent and East Kent, but I need to establish proper links before going further afield. if there is anybody with family linked, or potentially linked with these three names in North West Kent/East (urban) Surrey please contact me.

Photo: the pair in the photo is of my GGGF George Gilbert, aged 26 and his new Wife, Esther, nee Kitt (Kett) aged 19 taken on their wedding day 26th Nov 1860! Handsome or what?!

Hi

Gratwick is my maiden name and there are a few Gilbert Gratwicks in my tree. I have not found marriages between Gratwicks and Gilberts though.
