Harton Benjamin - Brickwall

Journal by Morleytree

Benjamin Harton - is our brick wall

We believe he is the son of James and Esther Harton born abt 1814 in Leeds, yorkshire, England. We have not been able to confirm this.

Unable to find any trace of Benjamin Harton immigrating or being transported as a convict into Australia from England.

As the story goes from family:

According to the hospital records at Dunnoly, Victoria, Australia which were obtained, in 1999,by family member, he told the staff that he arrived in Australia on the sailing ship "SOUTHPORT" abt 1832.
(Not confirmed and have never found a ship with this name possibly the Port of departures name?).
He would have been about 18yrs old. It was said that he told the staff that he spent 13 years in Tasmania and 20 years in Victoria.

However from his Death Certifcate dated 1871 aged 57... This would mean he arrived about 1838 aged about 24.

In 1857 Benjamin had a son :

Benjamin had a relationship with Poebe Dale and they had one son William B Harton dob 1857 Emu, Victoria, Australia, we don't know what happened to Phoebe because later. Benjamin married an Eliza Clarke (nee Lewis) and they had 2 daughters. Eliza Clarke (nee Lewis) may have been a widower as she had a son and daughter to " Clarke"... nothing is known of them.

working life of Son:

William Benjamin worked for Cobb & Co in Australia as a hostler at "Barnado Stn" 40 miles from Cobar on the Wilcannia road located in the Central Darling Shire in North Western New South Wales, Australia.. He was also at White Cliffs, a small town in outback New South Wales in Australia, in Central Darling Shire. White Cliffs is around 255 km northeast of Broken Hill, this was from 1903 to 1913 and his wages were 7 pounds a month.

William Benjamin was also an Opal Miner. not sure where ?

Little is know after 1913 until 1930 when it is believed the family lived in Broken Hill, Australia.

Greetings Morleytree.

You mention here that Banjamin had a relationship with Phoebe DALE and I take this to mean you are not aware that Benjamin and Phoebe were married.

Groom: Benjamin HARTON.
Bride: Phebe DALE.
Year married: 1851.
Place: Methodist/Wesleyan Church, Melbourne, Victoria.
Ref: Victorian Marriage Index #41B. Fiche #4.

Note the spelling of Phoebe.
Phoebe often appeared in the records as Phebe in those days.

May be of some help.

Tonkin,

Wonderful thank you for all this information.... your a gem

Might be that Eliza and Benjamin didn't marry ? the family thought that he had married Eliza not Pheobe .... interesting! and we didn't know about Thomas either...

Might be more than a few skeletons in the closet than we might have thought ;) hahaha!
