Does/did she have any documentation?
If not have a DNA test. If it shows native american you will still need to show some sort of genealogical connection to a tribe before the tribe accepts you. Then they register you with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. All tribes want proof and all tribes have a council which will describe to you what proof they require.
No matter who you are or where you're from the steps to tracing your ancestry is the same.
