I am also researching Nancy Mounce Lewey. My family information also lists her as Catabwa Indian. I am currently trying to confirm this information. Have you discovered any new information?

No. I am taking the info for Catawba Indian from a family list given to my great Aunt Dot from a cousin. I have looked up census records and other lists and can find her listed but she is listed as white. When I look up other census records for the last name of Mounce I find people of that name as coming from Ireland on ships to the Carolinas who were given Royal land grants. I have not been successful in linking her to any of them. I did read on one site that some of the Indian tribes were listed as white so they would not have to pay a fee like the freed slaves of the time. This was a way to differentiate them from each other. So it may not be possible to find a way to show that she was Indian. If you know of a better way or some other lead I would appreciate it. Thanks, cindy
