I have found a Thomas Gillis got a British passport no. 54384 on 22nd January 1862. My GG Grandfather Thomas Gillies went missing about the same time, how do I find out if they are the same person?

First of all, do you know the birth date of your GG Grandfather?
Do you know where he lived, his parents, wifes name, etc? If your Grandfather's information matches to the passport, then it probably is him. But look for other clues. If your relative lived in the United States or Canada, you can look at border crossings on Ancestry. You can also look at census records. You can look at the social security death indexes for clues on when he died.

If you have not seen this passport, you might be able to see it on Ancestry.
