I'm looking for more information on the McNeils of Cambusnethan/Wishaw, laterly of Motherwell

Query by aisling

Hello. My grandfather was Alexander Brown McNeil. His father John McNeil, mother Barbara Cree McIntosh Brown. John McNeil's father was also John, his wife was Christina Ballantyne (with different spellings, sometimes Bannatine). John McNeil's father was Daniel and mother Margaret. I'm finding these two Johns and Daniel very elusive. Can't seem to find out where they were born or passed away. If you have further information I'd be very grateful.

Thank you

Hello. I've found out a little more since posting. John McNeil and Barbara Cree Brown McIntosh were married in 1913, in the area where she was from, which is Muirkirk. She was born in 1889 and died in Carluke in 1979. John was born around 1889. He was a miner but I don't know where or when he died. His father, also John was born around 1847 in Cambusnethan, and married in 1868, in Wishaw, Christina Ballantyne. I don't know anything about Christina or where or when John passed away. His father was Daniel McNeil, I think born in Wishaw and mother was Margaret Robertson, who I think died in Wishaw in 1883.

Do you think you might know of them?

Hi there. Finally tracked them down as much as I think I will. They are originally from Islay, coming to the Wishaw/Cambusnethan area around 1800. This was Duncan and his wife Catherine (maiden name possibly Shaw). His son, Duniel, born 1820 was a miner, as was his son John, born 1847 Cambusnethan, his son also John born 1889, probably Cambusnethan and finaly Alexander Brown McNeil, burn 1919 in Motherwell. Thanks
