Information re Christina McDonald McDermid of Govan, Glasgow, Scotland 1843-1870

Question by JudithMcCaskillHarris

I am looking for Christina McDonald who is my G.G. Grandmother 1843-1870 married to Findlay McDermid in 1861 Govan, Glasgow Scotland. Christina's parents are John McDonald and Anne Grant. I believe John and Anne were married around 1838 in Inverness, Scotland. Christina has a sister Marion McDonald who married Angus McCaskill. BUT..........we have information that Marion's mother was Marion McCaskill (McCaskill's marrying McDonalds and vice versa).

Christina's son John McDonald McDermid was given to his Aunt Marion and Uncle Angus when Christina died, he was 2 years old. He lived his life with this family and married Agnes Jane Lyon and put his name as John McDonald McDermid McCaskill, thus the McCaskill name to our family.

Do Marion McDonald and Christina McDonald have the same mothers, this is a question? We cannot find this family on the census in 1841,51 or 61. Marion appears with Angus in 1871 along with my Great Grandfather age 2, John McDonald McDermid McCaskill.

Along with my cousin in England we have tried to find the answers to these question. We have tried familysearch.org, Ancestry.ca and Scotland's People and come up blank. We can find Christina/Findlay's marriage and the birth of 4 children. John, John My G.Grandfather, Annie and Alexander.

Complicated a bit, but would love to have answers.

Not sure if I understand what you are looking for and what you have but hope this helps

I think I have found them in 1851 Scottish census, living at 36 Kilmuir, Kilmuir, Duirinish, Inverneshire
John McDonald, married, 63 (1788) Crofter of 3 acres born Bracadale,
Ann, wife, 40 (1811) Crofter wife, born Duirinish
Kenneth, son, 11 (1840) Crofter son, Duirinish
Christina, daughter, 9 (1842) Crofter daughter, Duirinish
Alexr (sic) son, 7 (1844) Crofter son, Duirinish
Donald, son, 5 (1846) Crofter son, Duirinish

In the 1961 Scottish census living at Kilmiur, Duirinish
Ann McDonald, widow, 50 (1811) Crofter, born Duirinish
Donald, son, unmarried, 14 (1847) scholar, Duirinish

Can you give me some idea of birth year of sister Marion?

This information solves many problems, I couldn't find them in 1851 census on Ancestry.ca. Thanks millions. Makes sense namewise as Christina my Great G. Grandmother called one daughter Annie and a son Alexander.

We believe that Marion was born in 1838 or 39. Her mother was Marion McCaskill who married John McDonald then Marion marries a Angus McCaskill in 1838. One of her sons was Donald. This family can be found in Govan in 1871 with nephew (my G.Grandfather).

This makes us believe that John married twice as both sisters have different Mothers.

If you look (maybe you have already) on Scotlands People births of Marion McDonald, between 1837 -1840 Parent John McDonald, Inverness, Kilmuir, there is only one birth. It will cost you a credit to view this but if it is your Marion then it will tell you her mothers name. If you put in the name of Ann Mcdonald a the other parent you get zero result.

Good luck

Thanks so much for all your help. I have credits with Scotland's People.

I bypassed 1851 Christian (as I though it was a boy...pays to read) apparently a typo in transcribing the census. I certainly appreciate your help. This is my first time on this site and here I thought it was only USA.
