... re Catherine Jarden, deceased, probate to William Jarden and James Jarden (Mr Loughrey)

Alexander married Julia Sarah Protheroe L'ANGLOIS (1868-1949) in 1889
- Julia was born in Christchurch, 1 of 9 children of the Whaler Louis Eugene L'ANGLOIS (born in Cherbourg, Manche department, Normandy, France 1820 died 1924 in Christchurch) and Mary Maria TAYLOR (1833-1900). Louis & Mary had married in Tasmania Australia in 1852, then later sailed to New Zealand on the ship of his brother, Captain Isadore 'Jean' L'Anglois, the "COMTE de PARIS". Captain Jean L'Anglois was in Banks Peninsula in 1838 when Captain CECILLE of the "Heroine" hoisted the French flag. He returned in 1840 bringing out the first 62 French colonists to Akaroa. He also endeavoured to 'buy' millions of acres of the South Island (for the French Company) which comprised nearly all the land from sea to sea, that of Canterbury, all Westland and parts of Nelson and Marlborough. The deed was signed by a few Maori at Pigeon Bay on August 12 1840 which was a few months AFTER the proclamation of the Queen's Sovereignty (this was well known by Jean). Much has been written about L'Anglois's attempt to 'delude the Maori and deceive the English Goverment', the following is a good read:
Attempted French Settlement

Louis & Mary moved to Waikouaiti, East Otago, for a time

A charming story of Louis Langlois in 1880 (back in Canterbury and then aged 60), where he was known as the 'Bee Master"
DEATH - LANGLOIS, on November 19th 1900 at Opawa, Christchurch, Mary Maria, beloved wife of Louis Langlois, age 67 yrs, and daughter of the late John TAYLOR, Esq. of London, and cousin to the late Rev. George PROTHEROE, Isle of Wight, and of Canon Protheroe, also Thomas Protheroe, Esq. Solicitor & Barrister, St. Johns Wood. London, England. Home papers please copy
... note the ancestors of Julia appear to have spelt their name without the E on the end of PROTHERO
