John Moffitt(1791-1859) born in Lanton, Scotland

Query by Karen1969

Hello everyone! i am looking for information on John Moffitt(1791-1859) born in Lanton, Scotland. He married Eleanor Ellen "Nellie" Davidson(1792-1879).John and Nellie are my maternal 4th great grandparents. I have had numerous researchers say that he may be a cousin to the Moffitts that went to NZ and/or Australia. A George Moffitt was a name given as a possible relative. John and Nellie went to Harvey, New Brunswick, Canada in 1842, joining their daughter Agnes who married Matthew Piercy. Agnes and Matthew came in 1837. Currently i have a cousin travelling in Scotland trying to find out more about John and Nellie, but any information that you would like to share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I have communicated previously in relation to the location mentioned here, asking if the correspondents are sure they do not mean Glanton which is associated with the English Moffitts. I was wrong to take this line. I have done more research. Lanton is interesting. There must have been a time when it was in Scotland, or some atlases are out of date, or the place is right on the border.

It is, of course, right on the border between the countries, and is sometimes shown as in Northumberland. Glanton is near Alnwick the seat of the English warden during the Border squabbles, so not very far away from Lanton. I think, and memory could upset me here, that another name was used and it fits too. I need to check notes about the second place before mentioning it..

I am one of eight siblings and we have had DNA tests done for seven of our eight lines. We may have an 1865 second marriage issue to solve, but we are definitely a strong family. We have knowledge of the early Moffitts.

Brothers James, John, George, and Michael Moffitt came to New Zealand according to mining records, and other documents. John and James went to Australia where they had probably already visited. John remained there, but James came back to New Zealand. There is some evidence that a fifth brother came to NZ as well, but I have not yet investigated that.

Their father, Michael Moffitt, was born in 1793, and his father was also called John, his mother being Isabella. It is possible that Michael had a brother John, and we don't know about him because of he left for Canada. It was hard for this family at the time because they were dissenters, and hard for us too because their official records are not with the mainstream ones of the time.

Oddly enough we are playing with the connection between a Northumberland John who went to America and Daniel Boone. Making this more exciting, we are one step away from connecting the Radfords of Cullompton with the Cullompton Boones (Daniel's forbears) as well. So if proven we will have a double connection - very remote, but still exciting.

I have noticed the name Davidson cropping up amongst our early Moffitt settlers and also Piercy in the female Radford line of my grandmother.

Hope this is interesting after so long.

I should add that Michael Moffitt's father John died in 1794, the year after he was born. Many of us had previously confused him with another John who lived in the area, but he died after the 1841 census when Isabella was already a widow.
