My email is no longer edster@earthlink.net. It is now ed@friendsofbill.biz. I would love to hear more about the Newbegin line in England.

Hello. I'm a Newbegin by birth here in Melbourne Australia. I have a cousin on my aunt's side who has spent many years tracing the family tree. Earliest is Robert Newbegin 1685, Horton by Blyth, Northumberland, married Mary Watson
Has anyone found out where our family name started?
My grandfather Arthur Ernest Newbegin was a merchant seaman in the early 1900's, born here is Australia but worked on 'iron ships' sailing out of England. Dad (Arthur Richard Newbegin) said pa looked into the family history, while over in England, and found our ancestors were pirates given a reprieve from the then monarch for duty to the country, thus starting a 'new beginning'? I of course being a dreamer loved the story (despite now knowing what being a pirate really entailed); my sister says it's a fairytale, being the realist. Well I have told the story to my kids, it makes watching Pirates of the Caribbean all that more interesting
We are all scattered in different parts of the world as many families are but the name still remains very uncommon, so there must be a common connection? Where did it begin?
Cheers
Jen Littlechild (another quaint English name which people like to comment on)
I have the Census data that shows the other three sons of James and Marina. Curiously, Edward Dennes is not listed as a member of the household. At 14, could he have already been living apart as an apprentice? Link:

How extraordinary to discover information about your branch of my family tree. Edward Joseph Newbegin and his wife Marina were my great, great grandparents. But they had FOUR sons not just Edward Dennes. They also had Lewis, Percy and Donald. Donald Newbegin married his second cousin, May Wadham. They had three children: Donald, Mary and Phillip. Mary married her second cousin Alan Crosland and had Elizabeth, Richard and Sarah. Elizabeth married Dennis Yates and had me and my sister Mary-Jane. We immigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1968. There are many other branches of our family who have also come to Australia quite independently. I can trace Marina Newbegin (nee Warne)'s family history back to the late 1600s.
I have much information I can share with you and I would be very happy to discover anything you can tell me about the Newbegin family.
Kindest regards
