Smith Bell was born 25 Sept 1781 in Sussex Co., DE to Thomas & Thamer (Smith) Bell; Thos. Bell s/o William & Sarah (Tilney) Bell of Accomac Co., VA; Thamer d/o William & Susanna (Tilney)Smith, Accomac/Northampton Co., VA. Sarah & Susanna were sisters, daughters of John Tilney and Sarah Nottingham of Northampton Co., VA.

Martha was the d/o Isaac & Naomi (Owen) Buzby. Martha was born 10 July 1788 in Evesham, Burlington Co., NJ.

Smith & Martha m. 27 Aug 1805 (per Sarah’s obit they were married on 25 Aug 1805?) in Glouster Co. NJ--I know Martha was raised as a Quaker. According to daughter, Sarah Bell McMillan’s obit—the Bell’s were of Scottish descent and Methodist. Smith & Martha were among the first settlers of Elk Run township, Columbiana County Ohio.

Smith & Martha had 12 children all born in Elk Run Tp., Columbiana Co., OH & raised eleven to adulthood; however, I have only 8 names...Sarah b. 15 June 1806 (m. Taylor McMillan), Thomas b.?, Joseph b. 8 May 1809 (m. Maria/Mariah McMillan), *Hiram b. 25 Nov 1816 (m. Martha Freed/Freidt/Fried 30 May 1849--He was about 16yrs older than Martha), a farmer & contractor/builder, he's in the Columbiana County Agriculture Hall of Fame, *Smith b. 17 Feb 1821 (m. 1-Edith Atkinson, 2-Eliza J. Wright--my gggrandmother), a farmer & dentist, Mary Ann Bell b 20 Feb 1824-never married, Robert Bell b 14 Feb 1825 (m. Dorothy/Dorthea aka Dolly Betz--no natural children)-Robert was a dentist, & Martha Ann Bell b. 20 May 1827-never married. N. Bell is buried in the old Elk Run meetinghouse cemetery with Smith and Martha.

*Hiram & Martha had 9 children all born in Columbiana Co., OH: Sidney (Siddie) b 1850 (m Harvey Rhodes & had a daughter named Hazel; she was in the 1910 LA CA census, died in LA CA in early 1920 & is buried in Hollywood CA. Hazel was listed as a notary public in LA CA before 1920, & I have found that she died in San Bernadino, CA 16 Mar 1957 married name of Schissler—no other information yet--she bn 16 Oct 1884 in MO. Louis K. b 6 June 1852 (m Cornelia Morris) d 28 April 1924, Naomi H. b 15 Nov 1854 (m William Rufus Granger--1 son, Paul Clifton) d 17 Sept 1933--this is my gggrandmother; Rebecca (Aunt Bec) b 1857 (m 21 Feb 1878 Mark Stooksberry) d 1950, Elizabeth (Lizzie) b 1862 (m Wm Baker Frenderick 26 May 1886) d 1903, Mulford B. b 1865 d 1888--for some reason I think he died in CA--I have no idea why & I can't find any notes about it--but he is buried in the Kemble Cemetery in Columbiana Co. Mulford did leave his sisters land in Orange Co., CA--maybe that's why I think he died there...He is also named after an uncle, Lewis Mulford m to Martha Buzby's sister, Rachel. Anna b 20 June 1868 d 30 July 1929--never married, but was a business woman--she & my gggrandmother Naomi owned several stores together--one the Temple of Economy in Alliance, OH. George Clifton b 14 Sept 1872 d 6 Oct 1872, Norman b 4 Dec 1874 d 8 Feb 1878 of Scarlet Fever.

*Smith Bell m Eliza Wright (d/o Hamilton Wright & Margaret Jameson) had one daughter, Francetta b 16 Jan 1886, m Paul Clifton Granger 25
Mar 1902 & d 11 Aug 1943.
