Great Grandfather James Hallam came to New Zealand on the "Dunedin".
The Dunedin was a Full rigged Clipper Ship - 1250 tons and was built in 1874.
On her maiden voyage under the command of Captain Whitson, she left England on the 6 March, 1874, and arrived in Lyttleton, Christchurch on the 3 July 1874. Apparently there is a photograph of the ship in the Canterbury Library, but does not have the passenger list.

My Grandfather was Arthur James Hallam, son of James Hallam and Mary Starr.

Arthur James married Amy Hambling, daughter of Charles Hambling and Sarah Prattley.

They started their married life in Johnsonville, but ended up living in Port Ahuriri, Napier.

Grandad Hallam, apparently worked on the lighters moored in the bay.(before the 1931 earthquake).

Their children were Mona Isobel, Herbert James, and Thelma May.
Herbert James was my father.

Herbert James was born 21July 1910 in Napier and died 27November 1969
in Napier at the young age of 59.

Dad grew up and went to school in Napier, and spent his working at Jas J. Nivens as a Boilermaker.

Dad married Ida Ngahue Aranui in Napier in 1941. This is where my genealogy takes on a new role of Whakapapa. There are hundreds of names I have added to my Whakapapa, and it seems to keep growing.

Mum and Dads children - Arthur James born 20Feb 1942, d 20 Oct 1991.
Thomas Edward (living)
Beverley Ann (living) this is me.

I find it very interesting that in Napier, there was only ever 1 other family with the name of Hallam, and they were not related.
So have always thought we had a unusual name,- but not when you look up the name on say 'Family Search'. Also a place name of Hallam, a university of Hallam. It is a very popular name in England and America.
