Generally, remember to check out RootsChat then goto their Emigrants to Australia board once you have registered as a new user (free site). Lots of Rootschatters have 'Digger' type software on their computers, and 'VIC bdms' on cd-roms etc. They are happy to do lookups for rootschatters.

Did you have a look at the National Archives of Australia. Click on the third khaki coloured tab entitled Collection, then click on from their drop down list, Record Search, then click on Search Now as a guest user. Keep it simple, just type in your surname and click on the search button.

And you can't go past this site as lots of people first came to the Colony of New South Wales. State Records of NSW. Click on the State Archives, click on KeyName search in the first column, then type in say HAW, press enter, and interestingly you will see data like convict pardons, deposition registers, Estate papers, registers of firms, passenger arrivals, tickets of leave/pardon etc.
