| ELIZABETH BAKER was the Grandaughter of William Pitman and Mary Raison of South Petherton, Somerset, England, and daughter of Joseph Baker and Betsey nee Pitman of South Petherton.
Elizabeth was registered Yeovil in the March quarter of 1841. Vol. 10. Elizabeth was 5 months old in the 1841 census which was taken in the night of 6th June 1841 which would mean Elizabeth was born about January, which ties in with the birth registration. I have no idea why Elizabeth has Carpenter as a middle name.
Elizabeth spent most of her childhood in Somerset. She and her mother then moved to Southwark, Surrey, England. Possibly for financial reasons.
Elizabeth Carpenter Baker lived with her mother, Betsey Baker at 1 Pond Yard, Southwark, Surrey, in 1861 (shown in census). Betsey, age 50, was a nurse born at South Petherton, and Elizabeth, age 20, was a sewing machine hand, born at South Petherton.
In 1865, at Lambeth, Surrey, Elizabeth Carpenter Baker married Frederick Louis (or Lewis) CLARE (born about 1843, Bath, Somerset. Father: Samuel Clare).
Elizabeth and Frederick had:
Walter G. CLARE born in 1866 at St George Hanover Square.
Minnie Carpenter CLARE born 1868
Frank Willoughby CLARE in 1871 at Westminster, St Margaret, Middlesex. He died 1871, age 1 at St George Hanover Square.
Ernest Alfred CLARE in 1872 at St George Hanover Square, London.
In the 1871 census the Clare family was living around St John the Evangelist, London (which is Westminster)
Frederick Clare’s death was registered 1879 at St George Hanover Square, age about 35.
In 1880 Elizabeth Carpenter Baker CLARE remarried at St George, Hanover Square, to John Henry STEPHENS, born about 1844 at St German, Cornwall.
They had:
Harry Stephens 1881 Westminster, London
In 1881 census John Henry STEPHENS, a horse collar maker, living at 109 Page Street, St John, Westminster, London with:
Wife: Elizabeth, age 39 born Yeovil, Somerset, occupation: Tailoress
Step daughter: Minnie CLARE, age 13, born Westminster
Step son: Ernest Alfred CLARE, age 8, born Westminster
Son: Harry STEPHENS, age 2 months, born Westminster.
In 1891 census we find Elizabeth STEPHENS, spelt STEVENS, a tailoress, living with Minnie CLARE, tailoress, and Ernest CLARE, tailor, at 109 Page Street, Westminster, London, as well as with Harry Stevens, age 10, and Nellie Stevens, age 7 (both born Westminster). John Henry is not there. No mention of Elizabeth being a widow.
Elizabeth lived at 109 Page Street, Westminster for at least 10 years.
In the 1891 census A John H. Stevens born about 1842, at St Germans, Cornwall, is living in Shoreditch, London. A John Henry Stephens dies in Shoreditch in 1895. Not known if this is Elizabeth’s husband.
A Nellie Stephens was born 1884 at St George Hanover Square.
A Nellie Stephens dies 1891 sept qu. In London age 7. Could this have been Elizabeth’s daughter?

Ernest Alfred Clare married Annie Elizabeth Long at Chesterton, Cambridge in 1899.
Their son, Ernest Clare was born 1901 at Pimlico, London.
Annie Elizabeth Clare may have died age 30, in 1909 at Wandsworth, London.
An Elizabeth C. Stephens died March qu. 1909 at St George Hanover Square, London. Vol. 1a pge. 383. Could this be Elizabeth Carpenter nee Baker? |
