It seems that the Liggett's moved to an area in present day Smyth County, Virginia in 1787. The area was orginially Montgomery County, Then Wythe County, and finially Smyth County. I don't believe the family moved but the county lines changed around them.
It would seem that the Liggett Family left Wythe County, Virginia in October 13, 1812. They show on the 1810 census in Wythe County, Virginia and are not shown in 1820. The Land records show 14 transactions on Oct 13, 1812. Hiram says they all moved to Missouri and Alexander and Johnthan went on to Oregon. (FDL 2005)

I pulled out some of my books to see what I could learn about John Liggett (various spellings) and although this is very informal, I thought you would like to know John was an overseer of the road, a hunter (he got paid a bounty for a wolf head), applied for a tavern license, and filed a petition to have a location for a mill assessed for possible damages. He was also presented to the court for retailing "spiritous liquor" without a license. Guess he forgot to get his license again (it was required every year). As you can see you have a very interesting ancestor!
