Looking for Gilbert Rains born about 1842 in TN

Query by graines

Gilbert was reported as an 8 year old child in the 1850 census, son of Joel Rains in a large family. He was reported in 1860 as head of household including him and his presumed spouse, Rebecca Carver. I believe he is the father of Gilbert Raines (note spelling change)who
is my grandfather and was born in 1862. I can't find anything else on him. Makes me wonder if presumed Great-grandpa Gilbert was in trouble and got hung or something and Grandpa Gilbert changed his name. To look better, there was report of one Gilbert Raines being a civil war POW, but I haven't been able to track that down.

I am also Gilbert Raines (b. 1931 - ). I would like to hear from you.

I think we are talking about different Joel's and Gilbert's.

From my notes:My Joel was born about 1785 in North Carolina. 1850 Cocke County, TN census showed Joel (65), Nancy (57), Thomas (24), Eliza (20), Allen (15), Hiram (13), Alfred (11), Gilbert (8), and John(7). Thomas and Eliza were children with the first wife, Lucy Coleman. Eliza was really 22 years old in 1850. Joel married Nancy in January 1830 and the 1830 census appeared to show 6 sons and 3 daughters. Early censuses list names only for heads of households, so all the 1830 census tells us was that Joel was the head of the household with a wife and 6 daughters and 3 sons. Some of these children could have been Nancy's from a previous relationship. She was about 33 years old at that time. Documentation has been found for children of Joel and Lucy (in addition to Thomas and Eliza): William (Grandsire Bill) 1807- , James Wesley (1809-1864/65), Isaac (1815-1879), Unknown (abt 1816 - ), and Unknown (abt 1823- ). "Uncle" Jim Green had indicated that Gilbert had about 10 siblings. He indicated William (the oldest), Jim, Alf, Hiram, Liz, and John (the youngest) who was killed at the same time with Gilbert. Alf was the only one that Jim met. These indications are consistent with the compiler's findings of 12 children for Joel (7 with Lucy and 5 with Nancy) from censuses, web sites, etc.

Regarding Gilbert (my great-grandfather), I was able to track down something on his military service. From my notes-Gilbert Rains enlisted in the Confederate Army January 11,1862 at Newport, TN. He is listed as in the Confederate Cavalry, 5th Regiment (McKenzie's) from Tennessee, Company E. He was reported absent without leave on November 12, 1862 and captured by the Federals near Williamsburg, KY on April 22 or 23, 1863 as a Confederate deserter. He was received at a Louisville, KY prison on April 20, 1863 and was moved May 6, 1863 to Baltimore, MD en route to City Point, VA. He spent a few months either at City Point or Baltimore and was then sent to Knoxville, TN arriving on October 13, 1863. He signed an oath of allegiance to the U.S. as part of an exchange and was released to go home to Cocke County on November 17, 1863.

Nora Raines Ansley's notes (from talking with her uncle, Jim Green) indicated "Grandfather was killed about 2 miles east of Hartford, TN at John Raines Turn between Hartford and Grassy Fork. John R. (his brother) was killed at the same time by Yankee soldiers." This occurred apparently soon after November 17, 1863. Nora believed he was killed before her father, Gilbert, Jr., was born but apparently this was not the case, However, Gilbert, Jr. never remembered his father. Gilbert, Jr.(1862-1946) was my grandfather. I knew him well as our home was less than a mile from his in Blount County, TN.

In my research, I ran onto your line and was confused by it. We must be related but I am not sure how. My Joel had brothers, John, Stephen, and William. It is believed that their father was James Rains, born about 1750 in VA. William was born in 1783 in Rockingham, VA and married Frances Strother. They had sons, Allen James and Joel S. This is probably your Joel, but I have his birth as April 7, 1823 and death as December 26, 1884. I don't recall where I got this information, but I didn't try to verify it. I didn't have anything on descendants of Joel S.

I use Family Tree Maker, but am not familiar with PAF. What is it?

I appreciate your interest

Gil Raines
