He "came to Burgeo (Newfoundland, Canada)as a servant to 'Uncle John' Matthews". Joseph Small wrote this, but did not give any age for him and the only description was that John was a 'jerseyman', a general term indicating he was born in England.

Sorry, forgot one important fact. Sarah Matthews, youngest sister of Ann Matthews m. Joseph Strange in Burgeo, but they did not settle there. Joseph and Sarah had to return to England so he could look after the family estates in Hazelbury Bryan.
