Ellen PARISH born in Devon

Journal by TracySW

My great great great grandmother Ellen PARISH born 1834 in Devon to Joseph Parish and Loveday Spear. She came out to Australia on the 19 AUG 1853 per ship LADY KENNAWAY with her sister Elizabeth PARISH who later returned to England.
Ellen married Bruce Laythorne in 1853 who was also from Devon, he was killed in a mining earth fall at Raglan Victoria in 1859. They had 3 children.
In 1861 Ellen remarried William Milkins my gt gt gt grandfather in 1861, they had 4 children. I have no idea what happened to William as no death record has been found.
Ellen remarried again to Thomas Tinsley, He died in 1903 and Ellen died in 1913 aged 79

If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them or not,
Or don't you really know?
Some strange discoveries are made
in climbing family trees,
But some of them, you know,
Do not particulary please.
If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
There may be some of them, perhaps,
You would not care to know.
But there's another question
Which requires a different view;
If you could meet your ancestors,
Would they be proud of YOU?

It got worse too for Ellen and Thomas too, her daughter Jessie married Levi Chamberlaine 1886 and they had six children, 2 boys and 4 girls, they lived in the country in Victoria. One Christ,as Jessie took the girls on a trip to Port Melbourne and they all drowned

"The inquest concerning the death of Mrs.Jessie Chamberlain and her four children,Emily Ethel, Annie Irene, Jessie May, and Lilian Ada, was resumed before the coroner (Mr. Candler) and a jury at' the
Morgue yesterday.
"The Jury, after 10 minutes retirement, returned the following verdict -' That on December 27, 1901, In Hobson s Bay, Port
Melbourne, Jessie Chamberlain. Annie Irene Chamberlain, Jessie May Chamberlain and Lilian Ada Chamberlain were found drowned, and that on December 30. 1901, Emily Ethol Chamberlain was found drowned, but there Is not sulfficient evidence to show how or by what means they
got into the water."
It is possible, and having better knowledge this day and age that Jessie could have been suffering postnatal depression and may have drowned her four daughters and then herself.
I read a newspaper article on the incident recently and it was such a sad and tragic loss. Jessie was pregnant as the time as well.
You can read the news article and many others here.
