Hello,
Your journal seems to end a bit suddenly, perhaps you would like to ammend it??

I expect you have found the baptism transcribed to familysearch:
"Christening: 17 APR 1668, Saint Olave Hart Street,London, England - parents Daniel & Frances Skinner"

I looked in my copy of the illustrated Pepys extracts but Peter Skinner does NOT appear in the index.

If you put:("Peter Skinner" + "Samuel Pepys") into a Google search you may find what comes up could be useful. Do format it as I have done, including the brackets.

Good luck....

Thank you for your information. Peter Skinner and his mother, Frances, do appear in Pepys' letters. It would seem that Pepys' long-time mistress, Mary Skinner was a relation of theirs. However, I have not yet made the connection. Nor can I find how Peter Skinner came to be a staymaker.
Regards

Fascinating ? did you get the connection to Mary via Google??

Playing on familysearch I have found the following baptisms all at Saint Olave Hart Street, London, England, and all whose parents are recorded as Daniel & Frances Skinner.....

ELIZABETH SKINNER - Female Christening: 21 MAR 1656
FRANCES SKINNER - Female Christening: 06 MAY 1657
ROBERT SKINNER - Male Christening: 03 SEP 1659
SUZANNA SKINNER - BORN: 17 Jan 1661 ? BAP: 18 JAN 1661
BRIANT SKINNER - Male Christening: 10 APR 1662
FREDRICKE SKINNER - Male Christening: 01 JUL 1663
CORBET SKINNER - Female Christening: 15 JUN 1665
PETER SKINNER - Male Christening: 17 APR 1668

The names Briant and Corbet struck me as unusual so I thought I would take a chance and sure enough I found a marriage of a Frances Corbet of Edgmond, Shropshire, England. (Parents Robert Corbet & Frances Spencer) to a Daniel Skinner also of Edgmond, Shropshire, England.

This is clearly not a transcript from a register as there is only an approximate date, and I would bet that is not even correct.

I suggest you try to find the parish record of the marriage either by finding a suitable link on GENUKI?s Shropshire pages, or register with Rootschat and go to the Shropshire page there for help.

If you can find the marriage you may be able to establish the link with Mary. Presumably the ?strumpet? was either Daniel?s sister or the wife of a brother.

As to how Peter became a staymaker, familysearch seem to suggest he is the youngest of several; perhaps they put him into any apprenticeship they could find that he would accept??

Please let me know how you get on, and good luck........

OH NO!!!! SHOCKING libel.

I find: < The Diary ended in 1669, due to worries about declining eyesight, which in the event came to nothing. Giving up the Diary was "almost as much as to see myself go into my grave." (Quoted Samuel Pepys, The Unequal Self by Claire Tomalin) As soon as the Diary ended life darkened for its former author. Elizabeth died on 10th September 1669. Pepys had a bust made of her which was placed in his local church, St Olave's, in London, where it remains to this day. The bust is placed high up and is rather difficult to see. A copy is sometimes displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. A new relationship quickly began, with a woman named Mary Skinner. Not much is known about Mary. They may have met at St Olave's church, but this is not certain. Pepys and Mary never married, but remained companions for thirty three years. >

All Skinner relatives PLEASE forgive me - especially as I have read that for the employment promotion of some men, Pepys had a habit of demanding "personal payment" up front from the wives.

So, St Olave's was certainly local, but doesn't yet prove the connection to Peter.

Sorry again.........

I HAVE IT!! At least I have found something for you to work at verifying.............

"As for Mary Skinner, when she and Pepys began their live-in relationship in the early 1670s, Mary was a very young woman from a modestly successful London family...." {One brother became a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge while the other, through Pepys influence, became a commercial mariner. [Ollard 1974, 212 & Howarth 1933, 53 note 1 and 71]}

And on WIKIPEDIA:
"In the meantime, Daniel Skinner was approaching Samuel Pepys, whose resident mistress was Mary Skinner, Daniel's sister, about the possibility of patronage. He wrote an ornate and lengthy letter in Latin, (which has since been lost,) to Pepys on 1676-07-05, in which he noted that after four years he had still not been fully elected Fellow of Trinity.

So where do you go from there?

Thank you again. Yes that last bit on the London site is me. There are so many bits that I am trying to put together. St Olave's seemed to be the key so Shropshire threw me a bit. ?The London Merchants of 1677? lists: Daniel Skinner, Crutchet-Fryars - St Olave?s is near Crutched Friars ? [there is another Daniel of Bartholomew Lane]
The Skinners were baptised in St Olave?s.
Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), came to live in the parish of St Olave's in 1660. Pepys lived in the parish for 14 years and called St Olave's "our own church". He was buried at St Olave?s [According to the St Olave?s site]
St Olave?s is also the chapel for the Clothworkers? Company ? a possible link to Peter becoming a staymaker.
Peter b. 1668 was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors? School [making him most likely to have been the son of Daniel and Frances. There are a number of other Skinners also enrolled, sons of Nathaniel Skinner but much older than Peter].
A Daniel is also linked to Pepys. This Daniel Skinner was said to be an amanuensis of John Milton and possibly a relative of Cyriac Skinner to whom Milton dedicated two poems. So you see I have a lot o problems to try and sort from this distance.
Best wishes.

Yes, initially Shropshire threw me too, but I reckon I proved it valid via the Corbet link??

And then I fondly imagined the quotes above did strongly suggest that Daniel was Mary's brother.

There is a Cyriac Skinner on familysearch - well it looks like two but then I realised they were both given the same parents. That may turn out to be dodgy but there is a name and address of a couple researching him, so perhaps it might be worth getting in contact with them?

All the best...........

by dcorney on 2011-07-15 21:14:49

Thanks. Where do I find the couple that you mentioned? Some writers suggest that Cyriac may have been Daniel's uncle. While I have my doubts, both their connections with Milton seems more than a coincidence.I also found a Dr Basire, archdeacon of Durham who also married a Frances Corbett in 1735. She must have been an aunt of Daniel's wife as he mentions Daniel the merchant in Crutched Friars and left a small legacy to his godson Corbett Skinner. The trouble is that I find the incidental bits interesting that I tend to chase red herrings.
Best wishes

I found that info on the old familysearch site:

Daniel SKINNER - Ancestral File(AFN: 186X-565)
Gender: M Marriage: Abt 1644 Of, Edgmond, Shropshire, England
Spouse: Frances CORBET (AFN: 186X-57C)

That gives you reference numbers you could follow?

The marriage of the archdeacon in 1735 is a generation (or two)later though isn't it?

by dcorney on 2011-07-18 03:55:22

Yes It was earlier, but only some 9 years. Possibly the two Franceses were aunt and niece. Thank you again.

After many months of reading and research, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I have no obvious link with the Skinner-Corbet line. However, I still have Peter Skinner, Staymaker, who was married at the Fleet in 1702. Now I am trying to link him to a Peter Skinner, son of Peter and Ann, baptised at St Olave's Bermondsey in December 1682. I would be grateful if anyone might be able to throw some light on this possible connection.
