NOTES
the suburb of Claremont, Perth, WA has a Museum with a great deal of early pioneer names and history. Claremont Museum is situated in Mrs Herberts Park, a lovely parkland beside Freshwater Bay, a short walk from the CBD of historic Claremont
The Claremont Museum was originally Mrs Herbert's School built in 1860. It served the Pensioner Guard Community as a school and place of worship and it was the first school between Perth and Fremantle. It remained active until the opening of the State School in Bay View Terrace in 1892.

Mentioned on page 1 of the pdf file is:
* Henry HERBERT, father of Charles Henry Herbert above
PENSIONER GUARD VILLAGE 1851-1874
... During the Napoleonic wars British soldiers and sailors found themselves on half pay during periods of peace. After the wars however the need for a large army faded and deserving veterans were placed on small allotments within various British colonies. There they could act as a reserve police force. These soliers were called pensioners and in Australia they were used to guard onvicts.
The pensioner guards and their families who were settled at Freshwater Bay arrived on the first convict ship to Western Australia. They were each given a lot beside Freshwater Bay and a second lot at Butler's Swamp (now Lake Claremont)
... The Pensioner Guards settled at Freshwater Bay were:

* Andrew GORDON, Corporal, 40th Regiment
* Michael STOKES, Private, East India Company Artiller
* Robert LINDSAY, Private, 2nd Queens Regiment
* Moses O'KEEFE, Private, Royal African Corps

Hi jan,

that is exactly what I was thinking at 3am this morning when I was searching for him. There is a lot of Dongara connections around him which reminded me of 'our' large, (put-aside-for-now) journal :)
