... "I wonder if you could help me? I had a cutting from a NZ newspaper which has been lost, it was about a shipwreck in NZ where my GG grandmother saved people and was carried to A town? by one of the young sailors. Her 1st name would have been Sophia, either Noah or Rich or Hickman depending on the time, late 1800's/early 1900's. I am not sure if the name is for gg or ggg gma, Sophia Rich or Sophia Noah, but I am inclined to think it's Rich, she was born 1862 and died 1942, my mum told me she was visiting a relative in NZ when the wreck happened, and she was not young as I remember reading the paper cutting, which mentioned her as a grandmother, apparently it was a very rocky area and not close to towns, not sure if it was east or west coast but I think it may be South Island"

from the site All On Board Behave Splendidly ... The Wimmera's Captain, Herbert Kells, remained at his post until the last along with the Chief Officer Mr A J Nicol and the Chief Steward Mr H Verge. These and 23 others lost their lives on the ship. The lifeboats were launched but one was swamped and a second stove in leaving the remainder to rescue the surviving 125 passengers and crew. Once launched and at the mercy of wind and current the lifeboats drifted far and wide. Four boats containing eighty four survivors landed at Tom Bowline Bay near the very tip of the North Island in the evening of July 27th. On the afternoon of this day a fifth boat came ashore at Taemaro, four miles east of Mangonui while another boat was blown clear of North Cape and drifted down the coast to a landing at Kaiamou Beach

Hello, I am a great great grand daughter of Captain Daniel Sutherland Rich. Just last weekend I was in Hobart and met Sophia Louisa Rich's grand daughter. (Sophia was Captain Rich's eldest daughter, my great grandmother Alice Eva's sister)Spent an hour or so with this lovely lady and she had a few wonderful treasures. One of them included a description written by Sophia Burt(married name)of being shipwrecked off New Zealand. She also held a small diary of Captain Rich and also War medals of Thomas Noah from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
cheers
Wendy

OK Ngairedith, this is where my update post belongs! I have been given the name of the ship Sophia Burt was shipwrecked on as the Wimmera, no date as yet but would have been possibly 1920's. It was reported in the Hobart Mercury and Sydney Morning Herald as well as NZ newspapers. It seems she was quite a heroine and saved quite a few people getting her feet shredded by oysters along the way. I have been told that an elderly cousin I have traced (through Wendy, above post) has an original handwritten letter Sophia wrote about the wreck, but my cousin is not very computer savvy.

Alice Sabra Sophia Burt was my grandmother ( I knew here as Alice Exton ), Im pretty sure she was burried at Corenelan bay.

The Sophia Burt saga on the ship is very true as I still remember Nanna telling me the story in detail and it lines up perfectly with the account mentioned above.

My father Rod Exton, Son of Alice and Ralph Exton did quite a bit of work on the family tree. I have inhereted this reaserch if that is any help to you.
