Fairchild/Steele...Is there any Native American blood here?

Profile Research Contact | My husband's grandmother is 89, she is the granddaughter of Andrew Ulch MILLER and Minnie Martha Maria FAIRCHILD. Grandma was always told that her dad was 1/8 Cherokee, and his mom (Minnie) was 1/4. So that would make one of Minnie's parents 1/2 Cherokee. I have this line at least one more generation back on all fronts...but I never got wind of any native American blood at all. Minnie's parents were Joshua S. FAIRCHILD (b. 1813-1816 in Buffalo, Erie, New York) and Frances Maria STEELE (b. 6 APR 1827 in Tolland, Tolland, Connecticut.

bpeconge on 2007-01-18 14:33:14I married into a native family and have done some research on my husbands native side. One thing I have found is almost everyone thinks they have a cherokee ancestor. I'm not saying it's not possible, but proceed with caution. Natives tended to migrate for much the same reasons that the "white folk" did. Try researching tribes in the locations they lived. You may find that gg grandpa was a trader and married a daughter of a chief. Most often when natives married whites, they assimilated into white lifestyle and not vice versa. Plus there was quite a stigma being labeled native american, so they may not list themselves as being indian on censuses. If you need any suggestions, I will help you in whatever way I can, just contact me.

They were originally from Alabama. Let me know if you find anything.

beckykoelling on 2007-05-08 17:20:26The latest on this is that I have made contact of one of my husband's 'cousins', he does not have any indication of this either. There is a photo of Frances Maria STEELE (1827-1900), who was born in Connecticut, the daughter of Seth Dwite STEELE (1796-1834) and Harriet PAINE/PAYNE (1801-). The photo appears on Ancestry.com. It is entirely possible she could have some native blood.
The cousin believes that Harriet PAINE was too old at marriage to have been a Native American. She would have been about 22/23. We do not know who her parents were.
The other possibility is Mary SKINNER (1797-1821/23) who was born in Canada. Her father was Benjamin SKINNER. Mary married Joshua FAIRCHILD (1797-1891) 1818 in Canada. Mary's mother is unknown. No known photo of her available. Though, there is also a photo of their son, Joshua S. FAIRCHILD (1813/16-1900) on Ancestry.com. By far, Frances has more of a look than Joshua.
I intend to keep digging. Both families originated in Connecticut. From there, the FAIRCHILDS went the was of Niagara, New York to Canada to Ohio, Illinois, Nebraska and Kansas and Oklahoma. The STEELES went from Connecticut to Illinois then Kansas.
If the Native American blood is there, then fine. But it's a mystery and I love a good mystery!
telliott on 2008-03-07 22:25:01Have you read any of the books put out by Jane Fairchild Gilmore. She spent over 30 years compling 3 books on the Fairchild's in the US. She has pretty well documented the Ct Fairchild's.
I am from the Fairchild line she calls the Southern Line. My Fairchild's came from South Carolina. Her first two books deal mainly with your Fairchild line and her third with my line.
