Looking for Borthwicks in the Sutherland or Caithness areas

Query by shonaborthwick

I have spent months looking for information on my G. Grandparents. My Grandfather and his siblings are listed on their immigration forms as being born in Caithness, but my Grandfathers passport says he was born in Rogart. I haven\'t been able to find birth records or a census to verify this information. I know I have family in the area, but have no idea what their names are.

My G. Grandfather Robert Borthwick(B. 1874), My G. Grandmother Margaret (don\'t have a maiden name)(1877), Chrissie (B. 1907), Donald (my Grandfather)(B.1908), Margaret (B.1910), Agnes (B.1912), Robert (B.1915), Johan (B.1918) and John (B.1920). They all came to Canada in 1924 except my 2 G. Aunts, Mary (don\'t have a married name) and Ina who I believe married a McLean. My Grandfather Donald travelled to Scotland to see his sisters between 1973 and 1976 and I believe there was an article written in the local newspaper. I am unsure were the old homestead is,(it was a pile of rocks in the 70\'s), but it would be in either the Caithness or Sutherland area.

Anyone having any information would be greatly appreciated as I am at my wits end.

The Borthwick name seemed vaguely familiar to me, no family connection though, so I dug through my own research papers and found a reference for Borthwick on one of my family Birth List pages

Could this be your Donald??

It might be worthwhile getting yourself a copy

I found the Birth on Scotlands People web site, it's a pay to view site but has loads of information, you will probably find the rest of the family plus the marriage for Robert & Margaret McKenzie

This might be him, I'm not sure. I went to Scotland People site and spent 2 hours searching. Couldn't find any other information. Will keep looking on other sites though. Thank you so much for the information.

I'm thinking that possibly Robert was born in Caithness and the children born in Sutherland and also his marriage could be Lairg in Sutherland. I had a look on the county map and Rosehall is not far from Lairg and neither is Roagrt.

When you searched did you use a specific district or All, Exact surname and forenames that begin with and put dates one year before and one after.

I found this is often the best way to search

Under Births search
Surname - Borthwick - Exact
Forename - Chris - that begin with
Sex - both
Year range - 1906 to 1908

County/City/Minor Records - All records
District - All

with this type of search I found these children and Donald I have already given you.

Birth
1907 Borthwick Christina Ann M Rosehall Sutherland 046/02 0001
1909 Borthwick Margaret Rosehall Sutherland 046/02 0009
1912 Borthwick Agnes Clyne Sutherland 045/00 0004
1914 Borthwick Robert William Clyne Sutherland 045/00 0021
1917 Borthwick Johan Chalmers Clyne Sutherland 045/00 0018
1919 Borthwick John George Mac* Clyne Sutherland 045/00 0024 *showing part of the name only

You will need to view them yourself to get further details
