EUGENE LOUIS LELIEVRE An old and respected settler of Banks Peninsula passed away early on Wednesday morning in the person of Mr E. L. Lelievre, of Benoit street, Akaroa, who has been ailing for some time. Mr Lelievre was born at Ville Dieu, Normandy, in 1836, and arrived in New Zealand in 1861, at the age of 25, having come out in the whaling ship 'Coulon Coeur' commanded by Captain Le Basse. On arrival he farmed for his cousin, the late Mr Francoist Lelievre. Later he was employed by the late Mr Waecherle to carry the mails to Pigeon Bay, where boats conveyed it on to Lyttelton. In the early days of the bush tracks his figure was a familiar one on the Pigeon Bay-Akaroa road. After leaving this work he again assisted the late Mr F. Lelievre in his farming, and then he bought the holding on the Long Bay road, where he farmed up to some ten years ago, when he retired, and lived in his residence in Benoit street. The late Mr Lelievre married his cousin, a daughter of the late Mr Francois Lelievre, and had a family of eighteen children, of whom thirteen are still living. He leaves a widow, three sons and ten daughters, eight of whom are married, and a very large number of grandchildren. He was of an industrious and kindly disposition, and made a good neighbour and friend, though he took little part in any public matters
