AN ANZAC RETURNS.
A large and enthusiastic gathering of
the residents assembled on the Waubra
railway station on Monday to await the
arrival of the evening train, which
brought to Waubra, Sergt. S. Waterton, an
Anzac, who has been invalided home.
Sergt Waterton was one of the first to
assist as a recruit to the Waubra quota.
The Red Cross Soldiers Home coming
Commitee, despite the short ? ?
? ? in satisfactorilly carrying out the
customary arrangements and there was a
most imposing display of nationnl flags.
Sergt Waterton was escorted from his com-
partment amidst tumultuous cheers by
Mr. Arthur M'Queen his former employer,
whith who Sergt. Waterton will be a
guest during his ? sojourn at Waubra.
In the unavoidable absence of Cr. J. G.
Robertson of Mount Mitchel East. Mr.
M'Cafferty on behalf of the home-com-
ing Commitee and residents, extended a
hearty welcome to Sergt Waterton. He
remarked that no words of his could con-
vey to Sergt Waterton an idea of their
feelings of joy to be privileged to wel
come hom back again. They had fol-
lowed the deeds of the Australian boys
with the deepest pride, for they held Sergt
Waterton in high admiration. Australia
was his adopted country, but nevertheless
he was one of the first to answer the Call
to duty, and share the lot of the Austra-
lians. They deeply regretted that many
of their noble boys who have been his
comrades amongst whom were men that
the district will ever mourn, will never
return, but there was the great consola-
tion that we were on the ve of victory,
and the civilised world will realise that
they had not died in vain. They trusted
that Sergt. Waterton's brother, who was
still fighting as a representative of the dis-
trict, will also be spared to return, and
0n behalf of the the Red Cross Society and
residents he asked him to accept this wel-
come as but a humble acknowledgement
of their gratitude towards him in return
for duty done. On Friday night next
they hoped to be able to convey to him
and to LCpl Allan further evidence of
their indebtedness to them by extending
to them a public welcome in the Me
chanics Hall. Sergt Waterton gratefully
returned thanks and was then drven in
Messrs. Yater Bros. motor to the Waubra
Avenue of Honor, and afterwared to
Messrs, M'cQueen Bros. home. Sergt
Waterton said he had recieved nothing
but kindness since his arrival in Australia-
lia, and he could assure them that he
boys deeply ppreciated such treatment
He was please to be able to say that the
boys were still doing good work and were
forcing the Huns further back every day.
He thought the end was now in sight.
The people on the others side were proud
of the work the boys were doing, and
there was evidence of the same feeling
here.
