Article by jkcproject

If you have found this blog, (familycircle14.wordpress.com) you must either have ancestors from Louisiana or if you’re from my husband’s line, Eastern Europe. Welcome! I hope you visit us often. I’m currently working on sharing with you some exciting cultural history and I expect to make frequent updates of our genealogical research here. You will see fascinating family photographs, many of which are very old. We’ll share photos of documents that we've collected and continue to find. If you have anything you’d like to share – either privately – or to post on this blog, please let us know. We’d love to see them.

My husband and I have been involved in genealogy since the 1970’s. I was forced to take a long sabbatical when I became ill more than 10 years ago. When I recently came back, I was thrilled to see the growth of genealogy; a new wave of genealogists working from the comforts of their home! I’m so excited about this surge in genealogy hobbyists. I’m also very impressed with the industry’s current high professional standards of provenance, which is a matter of proper documentation in genealogy.

Genealogy to me is more than simply collecting names, but to discover our ancestors’ characters, learning real stories of their lives, to see how they responded to life’s circumstances. Even if the stories are gone, one can read much into the surviving documents, such as census’, wills or successions, and more. I believe we can all be inspired to live our lives more fully if we study those who came before us. Their memorable moments and their trials and sorrows can offer templates for us even today.

Back in 2011, we both took a DNA test. We intend to discuss its findings here and plan to take an updated set of tests soon. If you've taken a test, we’d love to compare notes. If you’re just getting started, and don’t know much about these tests, and how to use them for genealogy purposes, we expect having discussions here.
