You do not give any indication of birth dates, is this part of your family. I do not know how bmds works in NZ but but if you use the Folio Numbers can you not get the birth cert which might show parents names

Birth
Name: Ethel Louisa Newson
Birth Date: Apr-May-Jun 1876
Registration Place: Wellington, New Zealand
Folio Number: 1214

Marriage
Name: Ethel Louisa Newson
Gender: Female
Marriage Year: 1894
Relation: Bride
Spouse: Thomas Gardner
Folio Number: 1366

.....................................................................................

Also looking for information on the ancestors of Ngaio John Pope, Mary Altree and Phyllis Elizabeth Free. I would suggest you start a new post for each of these families with as much info you have. You are more likely to get a response

AWesome

I've just started researching and you are not only my first response (I joined yesterday) but
you have the exact person I am looking for.

My Grandfather (Mom's Dad) is Eric Palethorpe Newson Gardner (Jack, Johnny)

He was adopted out at a young age to his aunty "Ethel Louisa Newson", married to Thomas Gardner.

I am trying to find the true blood line but have found nothing above Ethel, so far.

I need to find details on Ethel's Parents (and above if possible) to continue the upline but need to know who her brothers and sisters are, 1/ so I can complete that family record and 2/ it was one of Ethel's brothers who was Eric's birth father.

I am an avid Videographer and have recorded most of my life.

I have the only video records of Eric Gardner, which I am editing now for release to family.

Hoping you can help and looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards Zakk

Additional,

I am planning to start researching birth certificates and, as I am trying to build life profiles, I was also planning to contact IRD for work history information.

Thanks heaps Crawford, This could be a goldmine

all I need is a link that confirms that its our line

1/ do you know if the Ethel Louisa Newson in your list is the one that Married Thomas Gardner.

2/ If this is the right Ethel then Eric Palethorp Newson should have been born to one of the males in that list, one of Ethels brothers as he was adopted out to Ethel and Thomas, Eric's Aunty.

by asheppard on 2015-03-31 21:24:19

This is possibly parents to Eric.

Note spelling of mothers surname

Marriage BMDNZ
1902/2648 Mary Pailthorpe Charles Edward Newson

Spelling for Eric's middle name on marriage
1927/4905 Phyllis Elizabeth Free Eric Polethorpe Gardner

Spelling of Eric's middle name on death
1989/39569 Gardner Eric Palthorpe Newson 6 May 1906

by Rokkorokko on 2015-03-31 21:38:22

Thank you asheppard

This could be the link as I was told Grandad (Eric) s "Palethorpe name came from his Mom

So his parents would have been

My Grandmother was Phyllis Elizabeth Free

Is this your tree also?

by Rokkorokko on 2015-03-31 22:10:00

Thank you Crawford and asheppard

I have now been able to build up the tree further and know the direct upline 2 more levels.

If you guys or anyone else has addition information, especially upline from Henry and Sophia Newson, that would be amazing

by asheppard on 2015-04-01 18:45:21

It may be a good idea to do some verifications for the information before you add them to your tree.

A copy of the following might be useful

Marriage Certificates for

Phyllis and Erics

Mary & Charles Edwards

Henry & Sophia

that way you can be sure it is the correct family and should also give you names of fathers and their occupation for each person.

Possibly the death certificates could also show some further information on each.

I couldn't find any birth record for Eric was his name changed at adoption or is it entered on BMD incorrectly.

On his death it lists his date of birth as 6 May 1906

by asheppard on 2015-04-01 19:06:11

On NZBMD these are the children listed to 1915 for Mary & Charles Edward

1903/1547 Newson Walter Charles Henry Mary Charles Edward
1904/1315 Newson Ernest Herbert Mary Charles Edward
1907/16335 Newson Harold Dousett Mary Charles Edward
1908/19940 Newson Lionel Edward Mary Charles Edward
1910/11256 Newson Lewis Douglas Mary Charles Edward
1913/20605 Newson Muriel Isabel Mary Charles Edward

by Rokkorokko on 2015-04-01 19:39:22

I have chatted with older relatives and the names were correct, defo correct tree

Yes I will be researching birth and marriage certificates.

Geneology is the best "Jigsaw puzzle there is, regarding building, and detailing, a picture of substance

I am also hoping to build details of lives, like my Grandfather Eric Palethorpe Newson Gardner by tracking IRD information for job histories etc.

Re your last post, awesome. I assume you are talking about Mary Pailthorpe and Charles Edward Newson.

My relative, Harold Foot, and I were talking about an "Auntie Murial" he remembered yesterday and here you have my Grandfathers original family's names as in his biological brothers and sisters, which no-one had, Murial included.

Thank you so much.

Is this part of your tree also?

by Crawford on 2015-04-03 21:47:39

Hello again,
I came across this on BDM. The date is very unusual - 1962?
When I put in 6 May 1906 this BDM Ref popped up - so this must be the right person. I wonder if Eric had some life event in 1962 that prompted the registration of his birth? perhaps something to do with his adoption? If you request this cert it might help to clear this up.

Here is the list of children for Ethel Louisa and Thomas Gardner from BDM.
Note: there may be more children born after 1914.

1962/126553 Gardner Eric Pailthorpe Newson Ethel Louisa Thomas -
1911/10269 Gardner Thomas Henry Ethel Louisa Thomas -
1914/26194 Gardner Hazel Marion Ethel Louisa Thomas
1909/19804 Gardner William Allan Ethel Louise Thomas

Ethel Louisa Newson and Thomas Gardner married on 28 April 1894. Ref 1894/1307

Hi

I realise these posts were made a few years ago now but I am a direct descendent on the Newson Line. All the names mentioned above are fairly familiar names on my tree.
Henry Newson and Sophia Anne Dowsett/Elizabeth Florence Newson are my 2x great grandparents. The names Elizabeth and Florence pop up a lot in my family line normally associated with the Hancox Family. Yes geneology is a humungous puzzle and I too are delving into the Henry Newson of Manakau Horewhenua who as I understand was originally born Henry Watt and somehow left Great Britain to go to Australia where it is said that he changed his surname to Newson. Everyone in our family is stumped on this one as we cannot find the proof of the name change. If I can be of any help assisting you pse do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi Limpylou

Sorry, only just now saw your reply

Yes, I too would like the answer to the Newson / Watt mystery

I would love to know the Watt upline.

The story in our family is that Henry Watt had jumped ship, becoming a fugitive in the process and 'looked up' at a shop sign with "newson" on it and when question re identity he gave that name, so the story goes.

Any info would be amazing.

Hi,

My great grandfather is Lewis Douglas Newson, i have abit of info in terms of the Newsons. Feel free to get in touch.

by Miss_Shaye on 2017-11-03 08:53:06

he second marriage of Henry Newson in 1898, says he is born in Suffick, his father is Thomas Newson, a fisherman and his mother is Mary nee Ellison. Henry told at least 2 of his sons that his real name was Watt and that he fled England bound for Australia and took the name of Henry Newson, a crew member who died on board ship. He then "jumped ship" and went to NZ. His death cert, if correct would put this about 1858. He married in Wellington NZ in 1862. (just a story quite probably, however...) The Watts and Newsons are neighbours in the 1841 and 1851 cenus, there are 2 boys aged the same, Henry Newson and Alfred Watts. Interestingly the names of my Henry's children born in NZ, are the same as Alfred Watts siblings. So I am trying to find out what happened to Alfred Watts and Henry Newson from the 1841 and 1851 census..
I have found a Thomas Watts married to Mary Ann Ellis in 1832 in Walton Suffock, where Mary was born, Thomas is from Flelixtowe, his mother was Jane Passiful and there is also a Newson who married a Passiful, so maybe Alfred watts and henry Newson (from the census) were even cousins? I admit I have not really "digested" this as yet, let alone made sense of it. Any thoughts?

Hi, Miss Shaye, Zakk and limpylou...
I am another descendant of Henry and Sophia (they are my 2x great grandparents)- and we have a similar story, told to my grandfather by his father (Henry's oldest son, William Henry) of Henry jumping ship and taking the name Henry Newson, although he was Alfred Watts. Over the years I have heard tales of fire/murder/etc... I think the only way we might get to the bottom of whether we are Newson's or Watts is to track descendants of the Watts family and have some DNA tests done...

by Miss_Shaye on 2018-06-06 22:36:14

Hi MatKat..

Just seen your message.

I have just ordered a DNA Kit so hopefully, it tells us something lol

Henry and Sophia are my 3x Great Grandparents - Through Charles Edward Newson (one of Henry and Sophia's son's)

I haven't heard anything about Murder or Fires so not sure on that story - but doesn't mean it isn't true!

I will do some more research in the Newson/Watts story.. :)

I will check back here regularly this time :)

So, Ive just done some research... I orginally thought Arthur Watts was his brother.... Infact it was his twin brother. They also have 2 sisters and another brother.

by Miss_Shaye on 2018-06-07 01:58:19

Alfred Watts was their brother.
