Looking for Alex Dibbs/family

Query by Agassiz

My uncle Alex went to Australia in 1925. He corresponded with his mother until 1926 (I believe) and indicated he was going into the outback. I understand from then on there was no further contact. My grandmother hoped that even during the last war he might turn up as a member of the Australian forces - to no avail. Any help on how to try to determine what happened to him?

Hello Alex,
You have posted some time ago, so I don't know if you are still trying to trace your uncle? I can't help, but my mother is a Dibbs, so I was interested where your family came from. Are your Dibbs' from Hunslet Yorkshire England?
Australia is a big country, with a few lots of unrelated Dibbs' here, not related as far back as I have gone anyway. My mother's great uncle Harry Dibbs came over before 1900, followed by his nephew, my grandfather, Anthony Charles Dibbs in 1922.
If you are still checking this site, I would be interested to know more about your branch of Dibbs.
Regards, Deb.

Hi Deb - it is very good of you to respond. My grandfather was a William Cowan Dibbs and he married my grandmother, Margaret Thomson, in Grangemouth, Scotland, where they lived. My mother and her brother Alex (probably born about 1902 or so) and a sister Jean, who died young of meningitis, lived in Grangemouth and I too was born there. William Cowan's father was an Alexander Dibbs who married a Jean Cowan in 1852 in Falkirk, Stirlinghsire, not far from Grangemouth. I really do not have any other info. about the family though I do remember my grandmother and mother talking about an Aunt Jean, presumably a sister to William. I had never heard that my Uncle Alex had gone out to join any relatives but that might have been a possibility. My grandmother died in 1946 and mother in 1972 so I have no further point of reference. Thanks for contacting me - and who knows we may be related, 1,000 times removed. Margaret

Hello Margaret/Alex,
Deb put me on to you. I am part of the Scottish Dibbs and have William Cowan Dibbs on my tree. I can not help on Alexander except to say he was bn 1903 & went to Australia Freemantle in 1925. He is on www.ancestersonboard.com. He is not on the wargraves commission site www.cwgc.org. I can trace his ancestors back to John Dibbs b. about 1766 & his wife Elizabeth Simpson. You probably have this. I have William's cousins & their descendents.
We may be about third cousins?! Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,
I was very excited to receive your message this a.m. - and believe it or not my late parents'wedding anniversary in 1926,23 Dec.
I really have no knowledge of my grandfathers'family other than a sister Jean. I think, from what I have researched, that William's father was Alexander (Meldrum??)Dibbs and his mother's maiden name was Cowan. If you wish you can contact me at theyews@shaw.ca and we can perhaps correspond more easily. So great to hear about new relatives.
Merry Christmas
