Dear Lindsay21, Hi there. You will be able to find everything you need on your PORTER family by logging onto Rootschat as a free member choosing your own username.
Have a read of what others have posted on the message boards. Once you feel comfortable, place an 1841 Census Lookup request on say the Somerset Board and/or the Gloucestershire Board (for Bristol).
You can track your ancestors through the Census years taken in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. This information gives you place of dwelling, occupation of head of household, names and ages of all children and who visited on Census night.
You can even get a volunteer to lookup Parish Registrys for you on baptisms, marriages and deaths.
TIP: Make sure you document all your information very carefully as many people haven't done this and have had to go back and repeat their genealogy again.
