Would you happen to know what year they may have been born within 5 years. Try this site: www.automatedgenealogy.com this gives the census for Canada. I found one person peter Scanlon in BC, do you happen to know their middle names.
On ancestry.com you can check to see if they entered the states via Canada or by ship to the states. If you don't have it maybe someone on the site may have and would be willing to check for you. Also if you put in Scanlon on community at ancesty.com you could get help that way too.

Many thanks for your post, the first site you listed I will link on later today,
The others you list I have info on file, including the research notes I made. And if memory serves me right the Peter you mention I have some basic info on file.
It seems that a lot of Scanlon Family members left Ireland, and not all due to the famine years.
For those who came to England, many went into Farming or Mining Industries, truly hard work and very long hours.
