My great-grandmother was Martha Allen COFFEE (aka Muddy), b. 3 January 1853 in KY (probably Montgomery County). When she was 7, the family was in Mining, Osage Twp, Morgan County MO. Her father is listed in three census records as Rawley (1850); Rolla (1860); Rolley (1870). Her mother is Ale Ann (1850); Alia (1860); Alsham (or Alshaw?)(1870). In all these records, the children's names, dates, etc. remain basically the same. Family lore says they were full-blood Cherokee and were forcibly moved to "Indian Territory".
Muddy's daughter (my grandmother) had a Bible Family page and some correspondence which listed Martha's sister, Nancy and brother, John; plus some cousins and nephews, Tom, two Joes and J. W.
Muddy married John R. EDMON (when? where?) Another surname that has been "changed" by census enumerators and transcribers. But in the family, it was always spelled out "E D M O N" when they were spoken of in the family tales.
John R. had a brother, George Washington, who remained in Missouri and raised a large family. Some of these descendants have recently made contact. In sharing photos, we find "twin" images (very close likenesses).
Would truly like to hear from other COFFEE descendants.
