Dear Sommerled, Hi. Any pieces of information are more than welcome and add to the greater knowledge of interconnected families within the tree.
It's highly likely that the witness to Bridget Slade's burial was James Cantwell my Great Great Uncle.
Thank you for sharing.
Alison.
Dear Alison
From your other Journal, Thomas BENSON born abt 1840 place unknown, married in 1863 at Maitland NSW to Catherine RYAN. Their daughter Bridget Ellen BENSON born 1869 Patricks Plain NSW
married James CANTWELL.
Is this the Catherine Ryan born in NSW in 1842 (parents James Ryan and Bridget Ryan (nee Dwyer))
If so, then this tree is indeed very interconnected.
Not only did Bridget Carroll's grand-daughter from her second marriage, Catherine Ellen Larney, marry James Cantwell's son Patrick (from James's first marriage to Mary Ann Kilroy) but Bridget's grand-daughter from her first marriage, Bridget E Benson, appears to have married Patrick's father, James Cantwell. (I do not use Bridget Slade as she was buried as Bridget Carroll - it is assumed the marriage to Slade was not successful).
Does this match your records?
Best wishes
Nel
Dear Nel,
Hi. I had a look at my PAF (Personal Ancestral File) where I store my GEDCOM file in my hard-drive and without bdm certs it is hard to confirm without 100% accuracy that it is one and the same Catherine Ryan. But there is a very high probability. I just never thought about it before.
I have a Catherine RYAN born 1842 Mulgoa, no parents names provided to me as yet, who married 1863 Maitland NSW to Thomas BENSON. (Details confirmed by BENSON/RYAN descendants).
I have found various overlapping occurrences in my tree that if you are not careful you can get lost.
There are quite a few BENSON descendants with whom, I am in contact with, would no doubt like more details expanded on this branch if you would be so kind. We have our tree at Geni.com, and to join us there, you would need to be invited electronically via your personal email address. It's a great site and has an extensive privacy policy - free too.
Q.Who were your ancestors.
Regards,
Alison.
Hi Alison
I did not know anything about the Bensons until this morning, when I received details from Bridget Dwyer's (Carroll's) death certificate and investigated all of the children listed.
Bridget Dwyer was born in Tipperary, Ireland abt. 1810. She and her first husband James Ryan were married in Tipperary in 1829. They had a daughter by the name of Julia in 1832.
In 1841 they emigrated to Australia aboard the 'Ayreshire'. (Julia is listed as 'Judy' on the ship's record, so until I received information from Bridget's death certificate this morning, I did not know her daughter's name was actually Julia).
Back to Bridget's marriage to James Ryan. I found the births of two children in NSW BDM:
1842 RYAN CATHERINE JAMES BRIDGET
1844 RYAN BRIDGET JAMES BRIDGET
The children are confirmed on Bridget's death certificate:
Julia aged 55
Catherine age 45
Bridget age 44
female deceased
I found an 1847 marriage for Julia Ryan and Matthew Maher in NSW BDM this morning. It is only while typing this comment that I notice that Matthew Maher was a witness at John Carroll and Bridget Ryan's marriage:
Marriage Certificate John Carroll and Bridget Ryan, both hold Communion with the Roman Catholic church; both of Paterson were joined together in wedlock by J.T. Lynch of Maitland, minister of the Roman Catholic Church on 20th September, 1848 at West Maitland, in the presence of witnesses Matthew Maher, Anne Cluff.
Catherine Ryan married Thomas Benson.
The third daughter Bridget married George Henry Hipwell. (Bridget Hipwell is the daughter who was the informant at Bridget Carroll's burial, where James Cantwell was the witness - the other witness was Joseph Schubert - I just found a Joseph Schubert married to Elizabeth M Benson in 1884 at Patrick's Plain in NSW BDM). Bridget Hipwell had a son, James Alexander HIPWELL. He married Sarah Therese Thomas in 1889. Sarah's brother is Charles A Thomas. Charles married Ann Elizabeth Larney (Catherine Ellen Larney's sister).
Will contact you by comment in the near future.
Best wishes
Nel
Hi Nel
My name is Julie MACKINNON (nee ELLEVSEN) and I am the granddaughter of Gordon Thomas BENSON son of John BENSON and Esther PEGLER. I have been in contact with Alison CANTWELL for quite some time. She mentioned to me that you may have some certs that would be of interest. Would you mind giving me some more information on them.
Best regards
Julie

Bridget Carroll (b. 1810 Ireland) had three mariages, first to James Ryan, then to John Carroll and finally John Slade. She was was the mother of Elizabeth Carroll who married Francis Larney in 1866. Francis and Elizabeth's daughter, Catherine Ellen Larney, married Patrick John Cantwell in 1901.
Bridget Carroll died 30th July 1888 in Mitchell's Flat, Singleton, at the age of 78 years.
Informant at her death was Bridget Hipwell, her daughter (from first marriage) living near Singleton.
Witnesses at her burial were Joseph Schubert and James Cantwell.
I assume that this witness is your James Cantwell.
