GNELYA SAVELIEVNA SLAVINA

Journal by Isabella

Pardon me for posting this info again but I want to follow the advise of the researcher who replied to my previous messages and put the names of the people of interest to me in the title section which means that here I am trying to find out what happened with Gnelya Slavina (this is her maiden last name) during the war in Belorussia where Germans killed her as one of hundreds of thousands of Jewish Holocaust victims there (I hope I'm giving you the right numbers). Gnelya was one of four sisters in a family that, besides her, also had Sonia (my mother's mother's mother), Vera-both survived Holocaust in the former Soviet Union, Sonia- through evacuation to Uzbekistan, Vera-we have no idea how but Vera and her daughter Rosa lived in Rechytsa, Belorussia after the war till as late as 1980s, at least Rosa probably did when she, at that time, wrote to Sonia's daughter, Haya, in Kishinev, Moldova, that Rechytsa has been hit hard with the Chernobyl-related radiation and they want to get out of there as soon as possible (Dora had immigrated to Chicago long before the war but we know nothing about her either, in fact, we don't know married last names of any of the sisters except for Sonia).

Sonia moved to Kishinev around 1918 to set up a family with a fellow Jew, born in that region, Ikhiel Revich, and bore two daughters to him-my mother's mother, Hannah (1919-1990) and Haya. Sonia and Ikhiel ran a restaurant in the center of Kishinev, next to their philarmonic building or something till early 1930 when Ikhiel died from a heart attack and Sonia continued to run the business on her own till the Soviets took over and in a way ended her working career in that country. With the exception of her war-time evacuation to Uzbekistan with her daughters, Sonia lived with Haya (and for some time with Haya's son and husband) in the same apartment till 1988 when she passed away (Sonia did) in Kishinev.

Although I visited a million of genealogical websites and organizations, I haven't been able to find any information about Gnelya and her sisters there, including Yad Vashem. If you know anything about parents and other ancestors of the sisters or the life of Gnelya Slavina, don't hesitate to contact me either by email or by sending your correspondence to my American address:

Presently I'm staying at a Tel-Aviv Hotel Imperial, room 206.
