ASHBY family, Hampshire and Warwickshire

My mother was Elizabeth Esther ASHBY, who had nine brothers and two sisters.
One brother and one sister survived only a few hours each.

Six of her brothers, and their father all served in the Royal Marine Light Infantry (later the Royal Marine Corps).

The siblings were all born in Gosport Hampshire, whilst their father, John ASHBY was born in Coleshill, Birmingham, Warwicks in 1872. He was the son of another John ASHBY and Ann PEACOCK, both of Coleshill.

Can anyone help me to go back further on this ASHBY line?

My grandfather John ASHBY (born 1872) married Margaret Annie Hankcock in Gosport in 1900. She was the daughter of William Henry HANKCOCK (note the unusual spelling) and Esther GUNTON. He was born in Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire, Wales and Esther was born in Chatteris in Cambridgeshire. They married in Chatham Kent in 1877.

Just goes to show how people moved around even in the 19th Century!

Dear jonalex, A bit of help for you if you aren't already aware...Sign up as a free member of the rootschat.com website, then goto their England - General boards. You can post Census Lookup Requests 1841 every 10yrs through to 1901 to trace your ancestors.

Even try parish records, etc. and/or look at the resources available for each county, there's usually lots of good links.

Hello Marie-Claire,
The short answer is "I don't know", but let's try to find out.
Was Ashby your Great Granmother's maiden name, or did she marry someone called Ashby?
If you can tell me where and when she was born, I might be able to tellyou if we are related.
My mother (Elizabeth Esther Ashby) certainly isn't
your Great Grandmother, but I know that she did have a great aunt Lizzie who was also an Ashby.
Please let me know if we are looking at the same tree and if so,I may be able to help you build yours.
Nice to see someone so young taking an interest in her family history, Keep it up!
