- Came from England to Wanganui as a master in May 1914, and was appointed tutor of Hadfield House in succession to Mr Hodges. In the short space of two terms he established himself firmly in the life and affections of the school. He at once interested himself in the Cadet Corps and the workshop, was captain of No.6 Coy., and given a comission in the N.Z. Territorials. He planned and supervised the building of the cricket shed, which in its unpretentious usefulness stands as a symbol of his own character. In the class-room, he inspired as well as taught, out of it his kindliness and sincerity earned one of those whose presence enriches the community they serve, and it was with sense of vital loss that we heard that he would not return to us again. He accompanied the 4th Reinforcements, and spent only four days in Egypt before sailing for Gallipoli. He died from wounds received at Chunuk Bair on the morning of August 8th, his company commander, a distinguished old boy of the school, referring to him a "a very gallant soldier who had shown himself just what an officer ought to be.
Thankyou to Richard Bourne of the Wanganui Collegiate School Museum for this information.
